One of my customers wants a couple of gargoyles for her store. (They're really more like little tiki heads, but she's calling them gargoyles). They only need to be about 12" x 12" x 6" (they decorate the top of a couple of pillasters). I was thinking of using HDU. Can I just laminate some sheets together and carve that? A full sheet of 6" thick material would cost more than the whole job is worth, so that's why I'm looking to glue up some 1" or 1.5" material (10 lb stuff). The finish is going to be fleck-stone or something similar. Could I use styrofoam or something else instead of the HDU? This isn't a gilded flourish -- its a cartoon monkey head. I think it would be fun to do the job, but the budget is only $500 for both of them. Suggestions? Ideas?

The Everwood samples I recently received are 12"x 12" by 2.5" - maybe you can talk your rep into giving you six samples - tell them you want the opportunity to see how their product carves - I would think that they might come through for you. Then laminate them. Just an idea?

Check out the local plaster supply places. I'm not sure of the name but when I was in Chicago a few years back I wanted some gargoyles and my friend sent me to a place that had plaster casts of them in all sizes, shapes, etc. They had a variety of other things too. I bought a few and had them shipped to my home in WA with no problem. You could probably find some of these premade and just give them the stipple paint job and be done with it. Sorry I don't remember the place but there should be some places like that in the bay area.

I did some dogs recently out of 1.5" HDU. Glued mostly scrap foam together with gorrilla glue. It worked great. The dogs were about 18"x24"x 12"

Scoot, Most of my HDU carvings have been done by using sample pieces laminated together. I use a glue that is made by(for)one of the HDU manufactures. If you e-mail me I will give you the details, I don't think they are a supporter here. Could be wrong.
I was given this glue as a sample as well, thats why I used it and it works great. I have used Gorilla Glue in the past for other things and I would imagine it would work for this.
There is a national chain Art supply store that sell Gargoyle molds and everything you need to make them, this would be another option.
