Hello I am looking for where I can get art work involving Captain Hook and Peter Pan that I can use to cut on our vinyl cutter. Any ideas? I use Signlab for software and a Summa Graphics cutter. Thanks

Hi David, There are many places to "acquire" the type of art that you need. The first step is to contact Disney and get permission. They've got entire law firms that do nothing but hunt down people that steal their images. A lot of people here make part of their living by creating clip art to use for whatever, so this is probably not a good thing to ask for unless you intend to buy it. I doubt anyone would be willing to help with this one though.

okay everyone, I was not at all looking to do something that was not legal, I was talking about purchasing something to use, not steal, just to make sure everyone understands where I am coming from. But I do appreciate the way everyone has stepped in to make sure I do it right. David

As the prima-donnas come out of the woodwork I must say I got through 50 years of painting Disney, Harley, Chevy, Mopar, Ford and various other logos and copywrited artwork which put money into the kitty and other aspects of life i general.

Disney may own THEIR cartoon versions of PP and CH, but Peter Pan is a story in it's own right, not created by Disney. You should be able to get a cartoonist to make you some original cartoons which will not infringe. Or, if you can do some drawing, go to the library and find some OLD books with the story and pictures, and make your own cartoons using the ideas you find in the old books to jumpstart your imagination. Good Luck.

Yep, what Barb said. Find a version not done by disney, or draw a new one up. Then you'd be off the hook.

Rocky and Bullwinkle are original art, not interpretations of literature, no different than Taz, Bugs Bunny, Jessica Rabbit or the like. Licensing is out there on them.
The exception to the rule is when a product or art falls into "emminent domain", a term used when the copyrighted materials become public.
Several years back, a friend in the comic book industry bought the rights to produce "The Man From U.N.C.L.E." comics. Even though the show had not been on for 20 years, the creators still owned the rights.
When a team makes it to the superbowl, NFL Properties has been known to show up looking for t-shirt shops bootlegging their logos. One shop I know in Massachusetts back in 1984 was sued out of business for printing the New England Patriots logo. (Pretty heavy price for 500 shirts.)
After 8 years of printing Boston Marathon shirts for most of the businesses along the race route, the race became sponsored and all the designs were scrapped...54 of them! The only thing we could do is stuff like "Run Boston".
In both of the cases above, even the mention of the date was enough to get thrown into court.
General rule of thumb..."if it's well known, it's owned."

Stuff like that on race cars? Hmmmm Where have I seen that before? Oh yeah, me!
Stuf like that doesn't bother the corporates on a local track race car. Not woth going after someone with all their money tied up in a car. The real trouble starts when you make a lot of money from the copyright stuff.

Well, we've covered the issue about infringing Disney's trademarked characters pretty well (trademark, not copyright).
I wanted to offer some help to the topic line. Dover puts out a lot of great clip art collections - they find the license free art and make it available cheaply. Some of the Dover books, like this one, now come with CD-ROM disks so you don't even need to scan the art. I was able to find a nice Peter Pan on page 29 ("storybook characters") of their book "Stencil Designs". There wasn't a pirate, but there may be one in a different book. (The book I have is sort of a compilation of a few of their other books. You might be able to find a book just of "storybook" or "childrens" pictures that has Peter and the Cap'n.)
The book is $14.95, "; ISBN 0-486-99951-3. Its chock full of great illustrations. I bought the book for use when doing window splashes because its got a lot of holiday pictures too.

It is Jim Davis that created Garfield, not Jim Smith. Just a point of correction but then again, Joe is more aware about this subject than most of us.
Remember the story that Butch Anton had in Sign Business about him painting a Garfield figure on a semi tractor and got blown into the comic police? Very humorous story.
