I got a wierd "return" e-mail from Doc Welty's email address with an attachment, since I did not send him an e-mail in the first place I'm thinking it's a virus. I opened it in my Mac, it did no harm but it had an execute file attached.

Good thing no one here likes me. I haven't received one virus.

Me too!! A lot of names I recognize from here, including Mark Smith. They all have the attachments that Jeffrey Vrstal referred to in a earlier post. Is there a way to stop them coming.??

That's funny I've gotten a couple with letterhead names I recognize. One was from daviddrane@bigpond.com. I don't even think that is your correct address. I forget the others I have recieved but there have been a few. Good thing I can't even open them on the MAC.

A little over a half hour since my last post and I have gotten 3 more junk emails. From: Ltrride2@aol.com ravenbr99@yahoo.com signs@balchsigns.com I have never sent or recieved mail from any of you. So I think some one is using the BB as list and sending to and from everyone. Seems really wierd.

It's strange, I got 51 virus e-mails again today. Earlier this afternoon I got 33 then 28 more tonite. They all come in a stream as if someone just turned on their system and it sent out one for each address.
It doesn't matter Norton stops them all. But I see these familiar letter head addresses like steve@letterhead.com and I have to delete them when I want to look.

Someone on that thread mentioned spider programs picking up e-mail addresses from BB's like this one. I have since taken my e-mail address out of my signature to avoid this.
It might be wise for everyone to do that.
People can still contact you through the e-mail icon above your post.

Didn't read this entire thread, but I think I got the gist of it. Recently, I've been getting worm spam to another address I posted here at Letterhead only, so I've eliminated it completely. Not sure if it is symptomatic to the problems described herein, but I'm running some IT tests here right now to trace the source and have some geeks coming over to sniff out the anomaly too. Methinks it may also possibly be a result/response to a recent post...will confirm later.

SoBig scans for files on a computer that have a certain extensions (one of them being .wab - Windows Address Book). Then it sends itself out to all those adresses. it also scans for URL's and sends itself to them too.

If I understand this the right way, those e-mails that look like are coming directly from "letterheads" might not be. The virus searches out e-mail addresses in a system and starts spewing crap e-mails out of that system that use the newly "found" addresses from the newly infected system. So, it looks like it is coming from a particular individual or two, but that person is a victim as well.
This virus stuff is REALLY aggravating. It's been over 1 month for me restoring stuff that was messed up or eaten or corrupted or wiped... what a pain.
And to think that I'm just ONE little business in the world. These virus developers... please come into my shop soon so I can show you the fury of my appreciation!

Yes, I understand how the worms and viruses infect. However, the newly established e-mail address I posted should not have been part of anyone's address book or the Letterhead database. Only after a certain topic where I got a little flack did the emails start. Not pointing fingers just yet, but it is quite coincidental. Further investigation is underway and I and my cohorts are pretty resouceful on getting a valid trace. I didn't open any of the alledged e-mails and the address has now been eliminated. Firewalls are virus protection are up on all other bases.

My response to the all the virus problems is to split my network.
2 computers are still connected to the Internet and they have all the usual protections, linksys firewall, zone alarm pro, norton anti-virus, ad-aware, spy bot.
3 computers are "sign business only" with slower sub 1 GHz systems no connections to the outside world. These systems don't run any software firewalls, no virus sofware and no spyware removers. They run faster than the loaded 2GHz systems that are on the internet.
I use a cdrw with sneaker-net to get data back and forth between networks.
It works for me.

as is known about this virus. It goes out to URLs and looks for email addresses there too. When it finds some it blasts away.
If some one has SoBig then it will look at a website for email addresses.. if it can get thru the security. Then if it finds one it will give you a treat.
The only nefarious action is the virus. Not some person targeting any one.
