It's been a great week at the ranch. We framed and sheeted a couple of the smaller roofs in the last few days. My crew has caught me numerous times staring back at the building, imagining how it will look with the rest of the big roof in place. This thing is HUGE!!!
It's been quite a few years since I've built a building of any kind and I've forgotten the hundreds of decisions that need to be made on a regular basis as the project unfolds.
In a custom and special purpose building it seems the decisions are even more numerous. Exponentially so.
Where do the electrical plugs go so that they will work after all the shelving and tools art in place? What kind of lighting is best for each area. Is the staff break area big enough? Which way do all the doors need to swing? How heavily can we theme each area and still have it function well? What type of ventilation should we install & heating is a big decision as well. Each decision we make seems to impact another area and result in another decision needing to be made. Funny how that works.
My studio is even more complicated as I want all the infrastructure hidden and yet completely changable for future needs.
Progress is happening at a faster & faster pace. And each day I get more excited about when we will actually have a usable shop.
The massive trusses arrive monday morning. We have secured permission to come in over the neighbors property as our driveway is too narrow. We will drop the trailer on the neighbor's place & then bring the truck with the crane onto our property to lift them off the trailer & onto the roof. The trusses are 14 feet tall to accomodate the vaults in the ceiling. (And this is with them being manufactured in two pieces to keep them small as possible to facilitate shipping) And our ancient trees only allow an 11 foot wide truck to pass through.
The train station (electrical building) is also coming together nicely. The cone shaped roof is shingled and ready to lift into place on Monday. We'll make good use of that crane truck when it's here! The visible progress will be substancial for sure.
I'll have my digital camera handy to take some pics to post late on Monday.
I'm singing & dancing on the part roof to be sure!!

Be careful dancing on the roof Dan. If you need an alternate method to hide wires and pipes, yet leave easy access to them, I noticed the satellite division at Crawford Communications (I letter trucks for them) built the entire floor up about 6 inches, using 2' square panels on a grid system, much like a suspended ceiling in reverse. Access to any part of the floor is simple and the miles of wires and cabling are invisible.

good news Dan...glad to hear things have gone so well...here's a piece of info we discovered (knowing you...you probably already thought of it).
We put our heat and air unit above the restrooms to save room on our work floor...I thought it was a good idea since it was lost space anyway...as it turns out there was an added benifit...the cooling system doesn't pull any cool air into the vents (because it's 10 feet in the air(thus it is more efficient in the summer months)and the biggest benefit is the filters stay cleaner longer (by 2 or 3 times) because they are up and out of the everyday floor dirt.
Keep at it and send some pics...
