I'm editing this thread and changing the content, ...the graphic viewing problem I had with my Dad's computer was the least of my problems....in an attempt to help him and speed up his computer...I messed it up instead...

It's an old Compact...about 6 years old I think.

It runs so slow, and as he never learned how to clean out the cache or defrag I did that for him...I also deleted what I thought was unecessary stuff like Norton antivirus (see, he never updated or downloaded new definitions so I got him AVG)

In doing that I deleted something that was needed to log on to his DSL.......

I've tried reinstalling the software for his DSL, but the error message still comes up.

I feel awful that I've messed up his ability to go online as he really loves it.

Please OBEE-ONE, I needs you!!!

a part of the viruses currently going around is affecting many servers from properly displaying web pages. it makes loading and viewing very difficult. my workstation is affected by this as well. our server folks are looking into a fix.

Try to 'right mouse click' on the x..
a menu should come up, select 'show picture'...
worth a try, it works here & I chose windows 98 over NT when I bought this computer.

Tried that too...nothing..

BUT....

In trying to help him with his computer...(he never even cleans out his cache!!)

I deleted something I shouldn't have [Dunno] (it would seem)

Now, when he tries to start his DSL he gets an error message saying a DLL file was deleted...

All I did was try to remove some old unused Norton stuff.....(it was WAY outdated and no longer used, but I couldn't find the uninstall feature)

Sems once Norton gets itself into your computer it is nearly impossible to remove it.

Any ideas? I left him unable to log on [Frown]

I need to do something, I feel real bad. [Frown]

Lets try a couple of things. Do you have the disks for the old Norton? Install, even if its old, must have deleted a shared dll. The error message, what dll is it looking for, make a list maybe more than one. We'll see if we can find it.

Alf...

I sent the link to the DLL file replaccment site to my friend who is trying to help my Dad...I saw the file listed, so maybe that will work.

If not, I think he will have a copy of that Norton.

[Thanks] for your help!!

A:)

Adrienne,

I think I've got the answer (this time...) Try a system restore to an earlier point in time. Check the help menu on "fix a problem" in that area is a link to "use system restore" while going through the steps it will allow you to restore to a previous point in time - hopefully before you played with it. When you do this all of the settings for that point in time will be restored (don't ask me how I know about this feature...)

Best of luck

Adrienne, a couple of thoughts. First, do a search of the hard drive to see if the dll name pops up anywhere on the computer, or on your computer. Many newer machines have all the Microsoft software in an archive file on the machine so that when you call for support, the software is easily available.

Also, call your DSL provider. They can tell you if the DLL is theirs or something in the system. I have had good luck with SBC DSL tech support. Vic G

Brian...I think that feature is only available with Win ME or higher (?) He has Win 98.

Alf sent me a link to a site which has DLL files, i see the missing one, now if my friend gets my email, he might be able to download it and take it over (crossing fingers)
