I received the "blaster" virus last week. So far, I have had problems trying to fix it, or get my system right in order to fix it correctly. Some of you may be in a similar situation so to help end your frustration for the time being, here's what seems to work.

I am running Windows 2000 Professional on two systems. In order to fix the "hole" that allows the virus to enter your system, you need to install a patch from Microsoft. In order for you to install the patch, you need at least "Service Pack 2".

Several attempts to upgrade the service packs have failed. Currently I have upgraded to "1" which is not enough for the patch.

The blaster virus (at least in my case) fails the svchost.exe file which you need to run on the web. This eliminates copy and paste functions and in some cases does not allow you to open links. It also prevents you from looking at certain files in "my computer"... for example, you open "my computer" then click on a drive, then go to a folder... nothing will show up. When the svchost.exe fails, you also can not get offline unless you actually disconnect your line or reboot.

Rebooting restores everything until you go online and get attacked again.

Frustrating.

I downloaded and installed "ZONEALARM" and since then, everything is working very well.

This is not the final answer on this one, but I thought that maybe it would help out someone in a similar situation.

This was an answer (so far) for me and is not going to be an answer for everyone else. I am not a certified geek so travel at your own risk.

yes,
once you stop the virus from accessing the web you can start the removal of the blaster. Firewall is what works to stop the access.

After u stop the access via a firewall you goto norton or somewhere where a fix is posted and download the fixer utility. This will remove the blaster virus.

After removing then you access M$ to get the patches that will stop further intrusions.
