Maybe Bob Burns can answer. I'm wondering, since I see all these T-shirts and websites now with the logo. I'm assuming it's the same guy that the letterheads are familiar with. Are people just capitalizing on his logo? I see a whole lot of websites and sorts selling decals, hats, shirts, etc... but is any of it going to a relative? Did he have any relatives?? Seems like alot of people are makin money off his image and that probably isn't legal.

The Von Dutch name and the ORIGINAL DESIGN flying eyeball, was sold to the guys who sell the hats and shirts etc., by Dutch'e daughters, Lisa & Lorna. There are many flying eyeball concepts floating around, but there were only 2 designed by Von Dutch......the ORIGINAL (first drawn in 1947), and a second design done in the late 60's(copyright held by ME). The clothing line , after an unsuccessful start, is now going pretty strong thanks to new owners and the MTV crowd. Most of that bunch don't even know who Von Dutch was..........sad! Well, I seriously doubt it's anything to do with the name von Dutch, and everything to do with the coolness of the flying eyeball, except in the cases where it's somebody who actually KNOWS who von Dutch is and then it's a tribute!
Of course, distinguishing the capitalists from the tributes is the tricky part!
On a related note, just yesterday I had someone send me "their" car club logo in a JPG, wanting decals made of it.. What they didn't know is that "their" logo was the famous Devil 'n Wrench design (devil with wrench "crossbones") by Coop! I told them their "logo" was actually copyrighted by someone else and I wouldnt reproduce it - Sorry!

Hey Bob, or anyone... got any Rick Griffin trivia for me? Did he have any "original" flying eyeball artwork, or authority to copy it? Was he assoiciated with any of the Von Dutch crowd? (If there was a "crowd"... I don't claim to know what I'm talking about anyway)

As an artist I think it should be taken as a compliment, most people don't know who the vice president is let alone a lost legendary pinstriper. By the way I think a majority know who he is, if you go to a hot rod show you can't walk 10 steps without bumping into a Von Dutch reference.

I went to Bob's page of reference, to see when Von Dutch passes on, but didn't find any reference to it. A copyright is only valid for 25 years past the death of an artist, and all rights disolve (become public domain) at that time. If one has been awarded a copyright, it is valid for that duration only.

Jack....... Bob "OWNS" the copyright to that particular version.....Not Dutch. and Bob ain't dead.......he just kinda looks that way sometimes.....hehehe
Myself, along with many others, have done various renditions of Dutch's Original "Flying Eyeball", since we first saw it...(me in the mid-fifties) Some as tribute.....Jimmy "C" ...Willy Fisher, to name just a couple...... Others just ripped it off as their own........
My last tribute was on Billy Lanes "Camel Roadhouse Tour" bike with the eye on the top tree, and his "Harvey" on the lower legs of the front end.......... Most of the times that I've done it and will continue in the future (if I even do anymore).......I put a little "Remember Von Dutch" somewhere on the piece
Since people like Dennis Rodman, and morons like that, started wearing all this stuff on TV............it's really put a sour taste in my mouth about the whole thing......!!
I'm starting to get guys wanting the FE engraved on everything from my mag-lite, and money clips, to you-name-it....!!
I'm getting damn selective about who I'll do this for anymore..........and won't hesitate to tell the clueless ones to take a hike.
My limited relationship with Dutch is another small story in itself......Nothing like Bob's, but never the less a kool part of my memories......and one of my very few regrets...!!
That's a little of the way I see it.............The rest ya don't wanna hear.....cause actually the whole thing kinda ****es me off

The copyright ends 25 years past the death of the original artist, regardless of who owns, or purchases the rights, or licence. Just a part of copyright law, unless things have changed in the last 2 or 3 years. A use it, or loose it deal.

Cool Joey, if I had to picture you in a tie, that would be the one!
I'm a long time deadhead & as far as them being at that show wiith Jimi... well, I can't say for sure, 'cause I wasn't there, but acording to the first sentence in that info I linked to above...
quote: It is quite possible that the most widely known image in Rock 'n' Roll is Rick Griffin's "Eyeball," Bill Graham number 105, done for a 1968 concert by Jimi Hendrix, John Mayall and Albert King.
