Been awhile using a hammer drill to anchor an "IMPACT RECOVERY SYSTEM" post in the ground with lags and shields.
My mistake was getting done with a job early and not thinking the new install through completely before starting.
Here it is basically. 4 bolts in 'ASPHALT'. Without thinking, I decided that the best thing to do would be to throw 4 shields in the predrilled asphalt and lag it down.
DUH, asphalt is soft!!!! So, I got (x4) 5/8" holes in the asphalt but the shields break before they tighten completely. Now, I am wondering how to finshed the install. Is there some alternative anchor system for ASPHALT? Should I fill the small holes and lag right into the asphalt without shields? How do I make this structurely solid? Thanks for your time.

Is there gravel and dirt beneath the black top? if so just get out there with your trusty pick and post hole digger and install with concrete as you would any other in ground installation.

I don't know of anything made to fasten to asphalt (ie, bituminous concrete). However, the asphalt is over something - either dirt, gravel, or hard concrete. So, you need to get through the asphalt and either pour some concrete or attach to the concrete that's down there. Anything else will probably fail on a hot enough day when the asphalt starts to ooze.

Thanks y'all. I knew that answer but, was hoping for an alternative. It's no big deal.....just a 20 minute job turned into a couple of 1 hour days/ job. Still learnin'.............. thanks again.

One other thing you could do is dig out a footing and POUR a layer of concrete into the dug out area, let dry and THEN bolt ot that, or set your bolts IN the concrete and then let dry and attach.....

Hi Corey, We've had some difficulty with IRS posts into asphalt too. I checked out their website and there is some installation info there. http://www.impactrecovery.com/install_main.htm Did you buy them from Alberta Traffic Supply? If so, ask them for installation help. Cheers, Duncan
