Hey heads. I'm getting ready to letter some windows, and I really don't know which way I want to go here. Should I do the solid black, then solid green, then more black, then the yellow [Dunno] ........or just solid black, with yellow, and just a green outline. just curious. It probably is as broad as it is long, but I think two layers would look better. Thanks! [Smile] -

edit: forgot the pic! duh!

Are you talking paint? I'd do the white, yellow, then green, then all the black. (I prefer to go from light colors to dark).

If you're talking about vinyl, then i'd lay the black, then white/yellow, then the green. The black is all one solid layer.

Or am I missing something?

Just like scooter said. Depending on how translucent your yellow/white is, it could get dulled out by applying it to the black, though.

I might cut the green outline and drop out of green, then brush in the drop by hand. Same with the white/yellow; cut all the way out to the black outline, spray your fade, then brush in the black outline.

The paint method may take a bit longer, but you'll use less vinyl. I'd do it that way mostly 'cause I like to paint.

Try putting the green outline on the outside of the black. Getting the green out of the centers of the lettering and making that solid black will increase the contrast.

OK, I'm sorry.....I should have said vinyl. The job is four hours away. Paint would be fun but...
Here is what I'm thinking. Yellow with a white fade. Lay down the black first. then put the yellow and green on that.
 -
The entire design can be seen here. Hope this helps. I really don't see a problem with this method, other than the green outline being a little more succeptable to peeling off down the road. I could put down the black, then a solid green, (without the center cut out) then another layer of black to form the black inner outline, and then finally the yellow. this would be more durable, but require four layers, and in my thinking not be attractive when you are close to it. That's why I can't decide on 2 or 4. [Dunno] [Thanks]

I'd add a small black outline around all the lettering. That way you won't have to worry about edges lining up exactly with each other. Black first then the other two on top of that.

Editted to say- I like the design!

The fewer layers sounds like the way to go; as long as the yellow/white is opaque.

Regardless how you do it, since the job is 4 hours away, I would HIGHLY recommend bringing extra vinyl (of each color) with in case you somehow manage to ruin some when applying it.

It's always the jobs which "should have been a piece of cake" that turn into the nightmares.
Having to drive that distance again could easily eat all the profit.

You might also bring a paper pattern which you could use in case you need to hand cut an entire letter or more.

I'd do it like ya said...
put on the black, then the white/yellow, then the green.

It would be a fun job to paint rather than vinyl.

Dave,

How about 3 layers?
Knock a few registration marks on the corners of each and go from the black up thru.

Just a thought from an old screen printer.....

Well, first of all thanks for all of the advice. Terry, I did put a small black outline around all of it, which did make the registration easier. I ended up doing two layers. I think it will hold up fine, even though some of the small stuff could be picked at by a passing juvi. [Roll Eyes]
George: I did try it with the green out of the centers of the letters. The contrast gained greatly, but it really screwed up the kerning. everything looked lopsided. I actually started fresh, and rekerned everything once, but it still looked funny. Oh well. It would have worked if I could have pulled it off...... [Smile]
Empy: I'm the adventurist type, I only took what I needed......sweated bullits the whole time!! believe me.
so anyhow. thanks all for the comments and suggestions. here's a pic of one of the two that I did. window
by the way. the flourish and the word "The" came off of my Vector Art Mega Collection that I won by being a resident of this wonderful place, (thanks Steve and Barb). Oh, and also, the Cardinals sign is going to be moved......thanks guys!

edited for psellign. duh!
