I need tips on lettering depths markers in a pool.
The surface I will be lettering on is 1" tiles. They are lowering the water level by 2 feet and so I can do the job The letters will be covered with water at all times. I have checked with One Shot and they don't think OS will hold up underwater.
I also called Oracal and asked about their 851 cast premium vinyl. They said it should hold up as long as I seal the grout flush before applying the vinyl. What sealer will seal the grout and still allow the vinyl to adhere?
Anybody got any tips or solutions for what type of paint to use? I know they make a rubberized paints for pools but I didn't know if it would work over tile.
I am thinking of making a paint mask and spraying with expoxy aerosol paint.
Help! I am sinking ..got to get the job done next Friday! [Wink]

Probably consider using a bathtub refinishing paint, the better choice would be Euroglaze because it has a short 12 hour dry time. Sherwin Williams' Tile Clad II may be easier to find.

Judy, I have done several pools in recent years. A premium acrylic paint is your best bet. As long as you allow it to cure before raising the water level in the pool.

Vinyl? As long as the pool paint is reasonably smooth, premium cast vinyl will last underwater.
I did a series of fish graphics in a children's swimming pool using Callon II.

Judy,

Have you tried contacting local pool suppliers? or pool builders? Surely they would have a line on the proper materials to use, leave the sign materials for the signs! [Smile]

By the way, if you can find a UV stabilized epoxy, you could tint it black and use that as "paint".. At least the epoxy is resistant to chemicals.

Judy, we had a customer years ago (large seed supplier in Indiana) they rented a cruise ship for company party/vacation, they wanted vinyl graphics in bottom of pool (they're logo).

We told them to use our application fluid with "premium cast vinyl" they were very happy with results!

Thanks for all the replies!
Jon, how long does it take for premium acrylic paint to cure. I have a tight schedule to keep. They will lower the water level on Friday and need to fill the pool by Sunday to give the heaters time to warm the water for use on Monday. I have been told that I could have access to the pool Friday evening.
Mike,I contacted one pool company and they had no idea what I could use...reckon I should check with some others.
Alfred, sounds like a good idea, but I wonder if the sealer will allow paint or vinyl to stick. I did call Sherwin Williams and was told that they didn't have a product for this application. I will asked them about Tile Clad II tomorrow.
Thanks,
Judy

Judy,
If the tiles aren't up yet try Sublimation printing and heat setting on them.

MY 2 CENTS...id at least scuff the surface with scotchbrite or somthing and clean with laquer thinner before putting anything you choose on it to give the medium a grip surface to stick to..being under water ill bet the small scratches wont show and help with adhesion...

Judy, premium acrylic paint sould cure enough within the time frame you got.

Added hint: Clean the tiles down with "ESP" it's made by the Flood Company in USA, same company that makes "Penetrol". It's a wipe on, wipe off solution that was formulated to make paint stick to ceramic bathroom tiles. Good stuff!
