Ted understands what we are talking about. I'm thinking of an ad that appeared in all the sign mags. It was full page and placed in a position that sells for several thousand dollars per issue.
The ad had a wonderful graphic of an elephant on the back of a van. Wonderful image, but the company name was so small you would have to get within 10 ft. max to read it. Potential customers had no idea if the company sold elephants, collected stray elephants or cleaned up after elephants. Great graphic, but it failed as sign.

One More Time......... As Simple as it gets.......
"A Signs Sole, and Only function is to "COMMUNICATE".... anything more is just bells and whistles !!" rg
In todays fast paced world, that truck is useless.........where the same thing may work ok on a web site, or some other place where it's not moving 50 miles an hour.
If it ain't read......It ain't comunicatin"......therefore "useless"

CJ - I agree with you to a point. If communication were the ONLY goal of a sign, then we wouldn't be necessary, because everyone could grab a piece of cardboard and a magic marker. That's communication, but it isn't very much of a sign. In my opinion, we also transmit an image or mood that enhances our clients product or service. Now, that may be bells and whistles, but I still think it is necessary.
