I just went back and read that post to try and see what was behind this apology. Since the posts were edited, I have no way to really know what happened.
What I did see was an honest question. I didn't understand the meaning of the word used either, but I saw it as an opportunity to expand my vocabulary. Why such a negative response to a word? Was it really necessary?
I was more upset over the tone of some of the remaining posts. We all come from different backgrounds here in Letterville. We have our deeply religious people, our bikers and outlaws, Pinheads, Letterheads and all sorts of other diverse "cultures." Let's not even mention the political zealots.
My main concern here is to see we all leave our egos at the door, and treat each other with respect. This does not mean we have to talk to each other like those mannerly chipmunks Chip and Dale, but it's not the local bar or biker hangout either.
All I'm asking is that you consider others when choosing your words and observe The Laws Of Letterville. Personal attacks will not be tolerated.

That sentence is an ironic summary of the situation Steve.
speaking of irony, I decided to look up a few words today in honor of this post... I don't think I would have wanted to stand up in front of the class to gamble that my definition of the word "Treatise" would be correct, but I felt clear enough on the meaning to not want to look it up until I read further on that thread. Then I kind of got into looking up words & took it a little further...
Robert said:
quote: I just thought it was verbiage commonly used to describe elements of our craft.
look where that led me.. some interesting parallels to points made about some word choices.
quote: verbiage /Ver"bi*age/ The use of many words without necessity, or with little sense; a superabundance of words; verbosity; wordiness.
Verbiage may indicate observation, but not thinking. --W. Irving.
This barren verbiage current among men. --Tennyson.
verbage
/ver'b*j/ A deliberate misspelling and mispronunciation of verbiage that assimilates it to the word "garbage". Compare content-free. More pejorative than "verbiage".
content-free
1. (By analogy with "context-free") Used of a message that adds nothing to the recipient's knowledge. Though this adjective is sometimes applied to flamage, it more usually connotes derision for communication styles that exalt form over substance or are centred on concerns irrelevant to the subject ostensibly at hand. Perhaps most used with reference to speeches by company presidents and other professional manipulators.
See also four-colour glossies.
flamage
/flay'm*j/ Flaming verbiage, esp. high-noise, low-signal postings to Usenet or other electronic fora. Often in the phrase `the usual flamage'. `Flaming' is the act itself; `flamage' the content; a `flame' is a single flaming message.
four-colour glossies
1. Literature created by marketroids that allegedly contains technical specs but which is in fact as superficial as possible without being totally content-free. "Forget the four-colour glossies, give me the tech ref manuals." Often applied as an indication of superficiality even when the material is printed on ordinary paper in black and white. Four-colour-glossy manuals are *never* useful for finding a problem.
Oh well, I thought I saw some irony anyway.
*edit* Robert, I thought I should add that I agree with some suggestions that your manner of speach may tend tword "wordiness" & before anyone else can say it... I am all too aware that this is one of my more obvious faults, so sum up this long post with... - - - apology accepted ! (by me anyway)

In our eagerness to defend ourselves or our position most of us will say things that later we wish that we could take back. Robert presented a apology to the Letterville folks. That is not always an easy thing to do.
Robert's mouth gets him in trouble sometimes. And I told him that personally before I wrote it here, so don't e-mail me. After all the posts and exchanges, the lesson to be learned seems to me to be to think before you hit the keyboard. Not all of us have the same goals, the same personality, or the same background. It just may be possible that my way is not the only way...or the best way.
I don't like family squabbles and I try to stay out of them. Usually, after a few minutes, no one knows what the rukus is all about and everyone is just taking pot shots at each other. Nothing positive is ever gained.
In this situation, Robert took a positive step and admitted that what he did was not constructive. Apology accepted. And a not a bad example for the rest of us.

I agree with Joey, although I don't get on the board as much as I used to..I do see in write, some very keen insight and am glad for the kind of personal concern that Robert, has for his craft. Also, no apology needed. I have blown up a time or two and humans have a way of using that as a clearing house. I consider Robert as a friend I haven't met yet and I'll leave it at that.

I see two real problems here. First....... Bob, was that "asside" a pun?? ...and , Joey........ You used "who" instead of "whom" and you ended a sentence with a preposition. I've hear that YOU usually end a sentence with a prOPosition. And thanks a lot!!, OP. I'm going to have visions of Steve headed south wearing just that red thong for days.... Geez, man!

I remember that thread but didn't post much in it. It seemed to me that things went sour after Robert posted something to the effect of" Thanks to those who knew what a treatise was ". I noticed the smiley face after it, but some people didn't & got onto Robert about him sounding pompous or whatever. Well, Robert got right back on to those folks.
Several people had already made light of not knowing what a treatise was. I guess a few peeps didn't like not knowing very much & decided to let Rob know about it.
Then Rob decided to let THEM know that he really didn't sympathize with their position.
Sure, he got P.O.'d, but he wasn't the first one to get P.O.'d & his original post wasn't really offensive.
I know people know each other in here & know lots of stuff & everything, but this is still really just an internet forum. You can't really tell what a post "sounds" like through the typed letters.
