We have a rat terrier-jack russell cross....a jackrat. She excavates, converses with the coyotes, entertains the cows, rides the bicycle with my son, and feeds the cats...
One day my son looked out the window and saw her playing with the bull's tail as he was lying down chewing his cud. We got out the camcorder and filmed them for a long time as he swished his tail, she grabbed it, chewed and fought with it. The bull didn't seem to mind in the least.
On another occasion, my son was halter training his calf when it got away from him and ran across the pasture. Kuddles ran him down, grabbed the lead rope in her teeth, and hung on tenaciously as he dragged her like a rag doll around the field.
A few weeks later, we noticed her stealing a kitten from the mother cat's nest and toting it out into the yard. The kids kept scolding her and taking it away but it was to no avail. When the mother cat tries to reclaim her baby, Kuddles growls and chases her off.
Some time later, while walking to the barn (dodging small craters), I noticed her tugging at something on a utility trailer. It was the kitty and his neck was stick between two boards and held fast. She had him by the head trying to pull the rest of his body through. Miraculously, the kitty was OK as I rescued him again. I have no idea how he got there.
Now it gets wierd. We finally found out what the obsession with the kitten was about as she just wouldn't leave him alone. One day she managed to tote the kitty all the way to the house without bein intercepted, laid him down, curled around him, and he went to nursing. Then, I noticed the dog is lactating. She is just over a year old, has never been bred and is lactating. The kitty is growing like a weed.

Last year at the young age of 2 yrs. old, our daughter's female German Shephard started bringing baby bunnies up to the house and laying them at the door. If the door was open, she would bring them in. We found the nest and returned the bunnies but we couldn't get her to leave them alone. We finally started bottle feeding them because I don't think the mother was nursing them anymore. They all ended up dying.
Now she is at it again this year.

Hey I have a chihuahua that wanted to be a Mom so badly that she 'kit' napped and raised 2 kittens from our old cat Ziggy, the black cat is still with us after about 8 years and yep, once in awhile Taffy will nab him and wash his face (boy does he hate that!). Don't ya just love that contented 'Mona Lisa' smile She also adopted a baby bunny which alas didn't survive..but not because she didn't try.

Laura, My son and I caught a baby cottontail rabbit when we were having our hayfield cut. We put him in a cage with some of my Daughter's Netherland Dwarf rabbits and he grew to almost their size. They got along just fine.
Yep Karen, That's what Kuddles is doing, ain't that cute. That's my kind of pet. Maybe we humans aren't the only creatures who suffer from psychoses. Did she just wean some pups or did she just do that spontaneously like Kuddles did?
