Here's a story from my earlier sign making days. One of my most devastating moments at the time, now it is just plain funny! A local fellow had a car that he had got repainted. We teased him alot because it was bright "SMURF" blue. Everyone called it the smurfmobile. The morning of his fortieth birthday, a friend and I snuck out at dawn and plastered his car with vinyl smurfs. There were smurfs sledding down his hood, roasting hot dogs over his vents, skiing down his roof, picking flowers, cleaning his windows etc. All said there were 40 ten inch smurfs on his car. Now this car had been painted about eight months earlier and was a home job. Because of the dew the decals weren't sticking so good so we left the masking on until they were all in place. Can you imagine my horror when I realized that removing the masking was taking the paint off in places. Here I am at 5:30 am vandalizing someones property. Now there isn't a chance in hell that he isn't going to know who did it! I very carefully lifted the rest of the masking and ended up with only a couple of places where I had initially pulled the masking off that were minus the smurfing paint! Fortunately he loved the joke and even wanted some of the smurfs left on. The rest I removed successfully a few days later with a heck of alot of patience and a whole days work. The good thing was that he blew the motor a few months later and I no longer have to recall that sickening feeling every time he drives by.

got 2 quicky "dumb jobs". 1st guy wants a set of magnetics, no problem. made em he comes to pick em up, put the one on the right side WALA!!! went to drivers door, flopped the magnet on the door........AND IT WAS LAYIN ON THE GROUND!!!! he had just bought the truck....and the left door was full of bondo!!!!!! painted my 1st car...1950 ford and this was 1962. parents owned a bar and one of the patrons said he could get me a gal of paint for FREE!!! OK!! i sanded the car, primed it with spray cans of RED LEAD PRIMER!!! with out a mask. took the gal of paint to local guy that had a compressor and paint gun and let him shoot the paint on the car. man the most beatiful black paint job you ever sawed. and this was old reg enamel sort like one shot. let it set for a couple days for the paint to dry.....well by now all the bugs in the world were dying in the paint...THAT WOULD NOT DRY!!!!!! after it sat a week, we finally figured out what was wrong.....the FREE GAL OF PAINT....was a mixing paint...it contained no drying agent!!!!!!! you can imagine the work it took to get all that wet paint off that car!!!!!!! i BOUGHT THE NEXT GAL OF PAINT!!!!

Hey Joe Had similer exp with magnetics... Guy orders them I made them and went to put them on the doors for him.. Low and behold they wouldn't stick they kept falling off.. This is how I found out Saturns aren't made of metel.

Funny stuff; here's my story: my first paintshop was 8 4x8 metal sheets to cover floor and 6 poles to hold up corrugated roof tin in a wrecking yard of a friends. In those days, I drove a bad-ass blown s/b corvette roadster, on way to lunch one day, I got stopped by local cop for what I didn't know, I hadn't done anything wrong(at least not in front of him), it seems my rep preceded me and all he wanted was a freebie magoo paint job on his wife's 4-door Olds sedan(ug), not even a cool project. He promised ammunity to ALL future traffic tickets I might earn, I of course , told him to pack sand. For a week afterwards, I received at least 20 tickets a day from all his "friends", so relenting to pressure, I agreed to paint car. I added 2 ozs' of wesson oil to paint and similiar to op's situation, (the paint won't dry), I painted her car. After fielding several objections that I met with excuses of paint co. problems, he left; everytime I saw car afterewards, it had something new stuck to it, including a full season of cottonwood seeds "white puffies". I finally moved shop out of his "jurisdication" and have NEVER heard out of him since.

A local car dealership hired me to letter a truck. Simple 2 color, maroon and black on a brandy new white and clean as a whistle. Knocked it out without a hitch and went home happy as a clam.
Two weeks later I get a call from a guy totally disgruntled, asking if I could repair the terrible paint job he'd just had done on his business truck...Says "the guy who painted my truck must be a bonehead!!!"
Yup. Same truck.
All the maroon had faded off in just 2 weeks to the point it was almost gone. To this day I cannot figure out what happened. I redid the job with a fresh can of maroon, and when he came to pick up the truck, I did the right thing...wrote off the bill and fessed up.
Shoulda seen the look on his face.
