Turned on the Gerber the other day & the fan came on, but no lights, no beep, no motors, no action... nothing.
Checked the fuses, they look good.
A computer guru friend put his muti-meter on it & said there was no voltage at the beginning of the board. He said that possibly we could find the bad component on the board & just replace it. He spoke with Gerber & they said if you did that most likely something further down the line would just go out later & that we should replace the board.
They wan't $1,000 for the board!
I don't know if it's worth it.
It's been a good plotter up until now.

For the $1000, is that for Gerber to send you the new board or for you to send your plotter to them where they will not only replace the board, but clean up and repair anything else that appears worn?

I think that's just for the board. A little more if we have them fix it. For a Gerber GS-15, I know it's worth it to get it fixed by Gerber, but the boss is pretty tight. I guess he doesn't have much choice, does he? If it was me, I'd get the Gerber fixed & get another plotter too. A sprocket fed Gerber will always sell.
I'm pretty sure it's more than 10 years old. It was factory refurbished before we bought it 2 years ago. I am kind of worried that even if we get it fixed, something else will go out on it before too long.

Then again, it may not go out again anytime soon. If your friend can fix it, I would let him. If there is no power at the beginning of the board it sounds like maybe something in the power supply. Check for components that are visibly burned. Just my 2 cents worth. Good Luck

If nothing comes on, then it's your power supply.
If your fan comes on but nothing else, it's your board. Roy's right, it could just be something simple on the board, but by the time someone finds it....

Hey dude, JILLBEANS postin' under catherine's moniker. Call Michael @ N. Glantz in Pittsburgh, he knows someone who has an immaculate 4b for sale (interchangeable parts?) for a song. 1-800-642-4240Had to buy a new used one the other day cuz Gerber wanted to charge me $2400... Good Luck! Love- JILL

Thanx Jill... I don't know about the 4B parts... that thing is ALOT earlier.
Yea, $2400, thats how much Gerber wan'ts to replace the board & refurbish the unit. That's just too much. A few years ago, I could see how it would be worth it, but I saw the same plotter on Ebay for $2800 the other day. I'm still not sure what we'll do. Most likely, get the board from Gerber & have our guy install it. IF, Gerber will take the board back if that's not the solution.
Otherwise... this one's goin' up for sale & we're in the market for a new sprocket fed machine.
