Stephen...When I first started in the business I used a signmaking program called SuperBoss. It was a DOS based program that did simple lettering and distortions, but also had the ability to import CorelDraw files. The final sign layout was saved as a .sig file.

If the file came to you from anopther sign or graphics shop that is the likley format. It was a program developed in Quebec.

I did a quick internet search for .sig file format and came up empty.

some more possibilities are,

Creatacard Fax Cover Sheet or Form or Sign or Photo Gallery Project
A Print Shop Sign File
Pretty Good Privacy (PGP) or GnuPP Signs File
A borland fax file
A signature file for a website (maybe with graphics)
A SpyBot-Search-and-Destroy Ver. 1.2 Signature File

Nicolet PRISM Data File

I cannot remember them all so here is a good start.
