While I was gabbing with Bob Gilliand this morning I had what I thought was a customer come in. It was no customer, it was Rapid Ray Rheaume from Brushwood Studios! He came all the way down from the north country. It was nice to get to chat with a "local" letterhead. Thanks for stoppin' by this morning! Always nice to trade stories.

Twenty years ago I spent a summer working for a mason contractor who called himself Rapid Ray. What a character. Started his day at 5am with a couple of highballs. The 9 o'clock "coffee break" on his crew was a twelve-pack. Some days he'd disappear for hours, show up on the job at 5pm, shytfaced, in time to send us home; other days he'd be so hung over he'd throw up into the cement mixer.

Twenty years ago (long before the "Rapid" part existed), I was dragging squeegess across t-shirts in Natick, Ma. I never hurled into the inks, but did spill a few beers on shirts for Coca-Cola after hours. Molson Golden, if I remember correctly.
I think the guy you mentioned got his name changed to "Boo Boo Bear" and became our shop foreman...lol. He'd get "shnockered" at lunch and spent the rest of the day putting ink on the back of squeegees, switches of the automated machinery, coffe cup handles, etc. He'd hide somewhere waiting to see the traps go off and then run away, yelling "RUN AWAY! TEE HEE!"
Thanks for reminding me of my old boss. Haven't thought about those days in a while. We were all young back then at Graphtex, and had a lot of fun. It had a family atmosphere and was a great place to work...and grow up.
Smiling the whole time I typed this.
