I got a this little plotter/cutter a few months back. Bear with me as I try to explain this...
While doing some race cars this spring, I'd create files with all the lettering needed. I'd place each line or group of the same color into the cutting area, then cut them. Occasionaly, the plotter would mess up big time, making random cuts in all kinds of directions sometimes ruining the whole sheet with a 30" slice for no reason.
Is there a limit to how big a file I can create, or is it a memory problem on the Stika or PC I use?
Does importing stuff from Corel have any effect?
Any help would be greatly appreciated before I start cutting SignGold and having this happen (not my idea of economically sound).
Thanks Rapid

Hey Ray, if I can jump onto your thread a little . . . I know someone who is considering purchasing a Stika, and in addition to your question, I'd be curious to hear any opinions on overall 'worthiness' of these little buggers. Obviously they're not a mainstream cutter, but the person I'm talking about has very limited needs (and budget). Thanks.

Ray, Were the Stikas made by Roland? I have a Camm1 by Roland that does all sorts of horrible cuts in odd places- only if I am online on the 'net when I am also plotting. As long as we're offline, everything's OK. Maybe the answer to your problem is as oblique as that? Good luck!
PS I think Stickas have a limited memory too, and a set length say 1 metre or so maximum that they can cut, that's why I didn't get one a few years ago.

Have an SX-8, keep it out in the bay where we sticker-up a lot of taxicabs. Easy to run drivers names, permit numbers, lots of quick & simple stuff.
Yes there should be a size limit, the normal width and I think 39 inches long -
ALL items MUST be in the cut area, as set on the printer setup dialog window, or it will lose place and do weird things like you experienced.
DO NOT just try to move the unwanted items out of the print area!!! (been there - done that)
That's with Corel or the Dr Stika software this thing came with.
Also- mine prefers a SPP conection )not EPP or ECP) on the printer port (Bios?)

I started off with an STX-8 Plus.. it's sittin in the closet now.
I never had that problem with oddball cuts, but I have had it not cut anything at all which was always solved by rebooting the computer. I guess when the computer gets bogged down the cutter driver flakes out with it.
I used to run the Stika directly from AutoCAD (at the time I was making a transition from engineering to art/design) but I know it also works great running right from CorelDRAW.

Ian, Yup. Roland makes 'em. I think the memory issue is the culprit here or spooling might be at issue. I never have run it while online and still had it screw up. I guess I have been pushing it a little too hard.
Thanks Bob, I guess scaling stuff and then creating files for each cut would work better. I have the info for cutting from Coreldraw directly, but have just been to busy to read it...lol
Joe, I dragged the Stika out to the race shops and hooked it up to a used laptop. Worked great for all the town names, phone numbers, smaller sponsors, etc. With a little patience, it does some pretty cool stuff. For the price, it's a good way to start up in vinyl cutting. Been pretty happy with it so far. It cuts slow, but I'd run off and paint while it was going.
Maybe your friend could get Mike's STX-8 out of the closet.
Thanks all! Rapid

Thats what I was just thinking. How bout it Mike? They sound like pains, glad I won't have to use the thing. I'm trying to steer her toward a well used 'real' plotter, but we'll wee what Mike has to say...
