Have 4 PCs networked thru a hub. All was well until we upgraded one PC to latest capabilities. My computer guru convinced me to step up XP even though our other three are Windows 98 op systems.
The new computer has hang up problems trying to access another systems C drive. Appears to try to read the entire C drive instead of just accessing the specific Flexi file we want to open or import. Is there a setting in XP that makes it compatabile with Windows 98 systems? I HATE this crap...but its a necessary evil. Thanks for any help.

I've never had this problem, but I do remember reading about XP trying to read the scheduled tasks on 98 computers and causing long delays.

This link will tell you how to disable searching for scheduled tasks: http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/troubleshoot/slowbrowse02.htm

I also found something about XP trying to contact a domain controller (that probably doesn't exist on your network) to verify passwords if you happen to use network passwords.

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;322097

I don't know if those links will help, but they might.

Oh yeah, if you haven't already done so, go to Windows Update and make sure you have any necessary updates before you bother tinkering with the above. Maybe the issue was fixed already.

I had a lot of trouble with the same situation when I upgraded one machine to XP & the other 2 (connected through hub)are W98. I also ended up taking the XP machine up to XP pro, but what worked for me was if you search around in the various network wizard windows in XP you should look for where it offers you to create a "network wizard disc" to load in windows 98. I'm not too knowledgable about setting up networks, but after well over an hour or 2 on several tech support calls, I finally got my network working by using this "wizard disc" It is a very small file that can be copied to a floppy, & installs on the other W98 machines in seconds. Hope this helps.
