A letterhead meet is inspiring, educational, full of commaraderie and a worthwhile experience to anyone looking to improve or rejuvenate their skills in sign crafting with techniques both new and tradional.
I've been to 2 live meets since May, and am heading to Quebec next month. Live meets are also very addictive...LOL
If you go to one, you'll never forget it. If you go to one, you'll probably go to more.

The simplest definition I can think is that it's a cross between a convention and a party.
I think most creative types live in pretty much a vacuum. People around them will see their work and say stuff like "that sure is neat" or " I sure couldn't do that"...which is nice, but not very inspirational. When you spend a few days with people with the same basic aspirations and interests, and then they throw a table full of paint, blank panels, etc into the mix for you all to play with...things get inspirational real fast.
Every Letterhead meet has its own personality, but they are all alike. In that, you will go home from every one you attend with new ideas and a few new tricks to throw at your customers. I always get a kick out of people's comments after a meet that "that sure was a great meet". Because, after you've been to a few, you'll notice that they are ALL great meets.

After the first of the year I'll probably attend every one of them being held. If she's ready by then, I'll be dragging Rosemary around with me.

Well, by now you got the idea of what it is. Bob has showed you where and when. I think both Ray and Don have told you why. I will add that the first meet you go to will be 1-3 days full of amazingly talented people that you dont even know. your second meet will be full of friends.
oh yeah, and because we are in the business of advertising. promotion of the event becomes somewhat creative, hense the name and wild logo usually afixed to the event. As for hosting? well ya might want to see how its done first.I had only been to 2 when I hosted my first meet in 2001 and my second in 2002 at the second one I past the tourch and Mass Mayhem 3 was just a huge hit held by Mike, Deb and Jay Zee, who will be hosting again next year and looking to pass the reins off again. as for the How? any way you can, get to the nearest meet you can!

A letterhead meet, is kinda like puttin church, school and a party with yer friends into a blender.
You'll leave inspired. You'll leave with more knowledge than you came in with. You'll make new friends, and reaffirm old friendships.
Actually, it's kinda like going to the gym, only it's for your heart, soul and brain.
I went to my first letterhead meet in 1988. John Hodgins hosted it in Batavia. I had a blast, and experienced all of the aforementioned.
Things I've come to learn and revel in through my letterhead experiences...
1. LISTEN and OBSERVE...I've learned as much from fellow letterheads and pinheads who are NEW to the trade (yeah Atomik Matt..that's you) as I have from the veterans of the trades who already had a decade of experience under their belts when I was still torturing GI Joes with a soldering iron (so I was a weird kid...)
2. It's not just a cliche..99.9% of the participants check their egos at the door, and it becomes an environment of mutal respect, knowledge sharing, and non-judgemental comradary. We're all on equal footing when we're at a meet.
3. What I enjoy most...learning more about the people BEHIND the skills. It's very, very neat meeting one of the "icons" of the trades, or at least someone whose worked you've admired for years, and allowing yourself to take them off of the pedestal you've always placed them on. You learn about their families, their outside interests, what drives them...you learn that Jeff Williams probably is indeed from a different planet.
In short...there's not much you can do for yourself that's better than attending a meet of any size...6 of us in a garage, or 250 of us in a convention hall.
It will charge your battery, and remind you why it is that you do what you do.
Get to a meet.
Keep on keepin' on,
Brian Briskie

Rick, go to a meet and keep asking questions like you did in your post title and you will learn 'a lot'...that's the way to go.
I've gone to three meets and look forward to more...all of the above is true what has been said (except one...take that one with a grain ...quite a few grains..of salt).

A Letterhead Meet can be as simple as 2 people sharing stories and knowledge at a donut shop. It does not have to be a big event.
A BBQ is one way to get the ball moving. Invite all the locals over, have some inexpensive panels available for demos, and just let things happen.
Another suggestion! You may already have several potential Letterheads in your area. Over the years, 8,279 sign shops have registered here in Letterville. Unfortunitly, many who took the time to register, never took the next step and got involved. Who knows why some "get it" and so many others don't?
The good news is that everyone who ever registered is still in the Letterville Database. If you are looking for other Letterheads in your area, this might be a valuable tool.
A word of caution! This information is not to be used for spamming or other forms of marketing.

I still think you should defintely go to one before you host one. However, I went to 1 meet(Cam's in Ct.) and when I got home I started planning my first one. oh, and Steve, I spammed every sign shop from here to Maine with the database. I also got my local suppiers to give out fliers.

Just covering my butt Ken. Letterville users are more than welcome to use anything on the website that might aid in the growth of Letterheads.
From time to time, we are accused of selling or renting the info in the Letterville Database. I was attempting to address this, and head off any new questions. Our Database is not, and has never been for sale or rent to suppliers interesting in marketing to sign shops.

Im just kidding Steve, I know that it has become an issue, I myself have gotten "spam" regarding web hosting that mentioned Letterville right in the subject line, I know that they stole the name out of the database but thats pretty ballsy.

GO TO ONE! I don't know what part of Michigan you are in, but there are going to be TWO meets up in that area this August. Check out the one in Wisconsin and the one in Canada August 20th thru the 24th. I would say pick the one that appeals to you the most (Don't know what your shop does) and attend! We will be at Tomahawk and it sounds like it is going to be a blast! Canada sounded good too. You will NOT be sorry you went! You will meet some of the best people there are and you will learn as much as you want to. And while you are there, PARTICIPATE, don't just watch! You can learn alot from the seminars and vendors, etc. but the real fun is trying something new or learning something new about an area you already do. ...just my two cents. --Jane

I want to address something that I didn't see mentioned. Rick, don't run out early in the evening or you might miss some pretty good singing, guitar playing and all around goofey-ness that usually happens late in the evening. Hopefully Steve will have a new Martin as he is a really good player.
