Von Dutch fans will be interested in reading this mini version of the life and times of this legendary character. Bob Burns was gracious enough to share this with us a few years back. It's a goodie!

Bob, Are you writing the book??? When you first posted this I did a serch on google for "Von Dutch" and the first thing that came up was your article here in Letterville. I was very impressed and learned several things about him.
It seems to me that he didn't really like striping all too much. That amazes me, I would have thought he would have had a great passion for it, just looking at his work.
I have always wanted to write a book, especially a horror one. Fiction of course. Can't wait for the Von Dutch book!!!

Troy, I'll be doing the FORWARD (or something similar) in the book. This has been in the making for many years. Lots of input from lots of people who knew Dutch well.......lots of pictures too. It's in the works so I havent seen a 'finished' product, but, because of those involved, I expect it to be a good one. Check out the VonDutch UNOFFICIAL WEBSITE: www.vondutch.freeservers.com

I am graciously awaiting for another book on Von Dutch. What I'd like to see really is a book on the life and times of Bob Burns while hanging with Von Dutch, through Bob's eyes.
Hey, I was there sitting on the beer can sofa

Yeah, it's about time, please keep us informed. This weekend I saw a couple of newish hot rod books showcasing the nostalgia angle, Rat Cars, oldies being pulled out of barns, etc. and they both had articles on Dutch's two shows here in SoCal - one in Northridge, which was by far the better show, and the mini one in Santa Ana. One of the mags is called Rolls & Pleats, and I forget the other, but I'll be looking for them at the next Rat Fink Reunion. Finally participated in one last weekend 7/12.

Joey, I've been talking to Dutch's sister about putting a book together on Dutch as a real person....not so much his work. I'm told his ex Sheila may be interested in sharing the input. We'll see what turns up.

That would be nice Bob. Alot of things that are said in books of his work are just re-hashed stories from here-say from those who weren't there. Many stripers have another love of making things other then striping itself, but to say that Dutch did'nt like to stripe is a joke. The joke itself is how much love for pranks he put into his work. My take is that he had a great talent for the mechanical aspect of his creations which shows in his guns and knives which has also been re-hashed time and again.
From one like yourself who was there from time to time, stories that pertain to the man himself would be a welcomed sight to myself and others who can get a better outlook from his crazy personality. I think we all look at ourselves differently when life changes right in front of us and nothing can be done of it.

Dutch LOVED machines of any kind. He understood them, and they understood HIM (so he said!)! He actually considered the idea that HE was really a machine himself, they understood each other so well. Like the time he was invited to the Steve McQuuen Auction in Las Vegas. He washed his old truck before he left Cal. and when he got to Vegas, he put a quarter in the first "machine" he saw and won a $2500 jackpot. He was certain that the truck somehow conveyed to the one-armed bandit, that Dutch washed the truck, so he was deserving of the jackpot!....................!
