As a guy that has lettered mostly with one shot enamel, what are your thoughts on water base paint for hand lettering? I've heard some positive comments on Ronan Aquacote. Have any of you tried it for single stroke lettering? If so, what kind of brushes do you use...Grey or Brown Quills or Red Sables? What substrates do you paint on? What additives are available for modifying it? Does one shot make a waterbase line suitable for lettering? Cheers,

Haven't tried Ronoan's Aquacoat yet, still have some Decca left. 1Shot had a water base paint that was pretty good, but Decca was better...now both are gone!
I found that the Noctuna line of synthetic brushes work very well with water base paints.

Hello Duncan!! How's the "NEST?" I use Mack Water Base Brushes and I have found them to be very similar to Lettering quills. I too was a DEKA fan, and I even looked for them in Germany to no avail. Guesss that's over, anyway, I use Aquacoat and some Diamond Vogel water base. Bill Hueg showed me a brand of Sherwin Williams he was using aboiut a month ago and it seemed to cover great, it was called "Metalatex". I have yet to try it. Good luck and say hi to your wife for me and if you ever have Duncan cook you eggs, look for his "Big Ass" Spachula! haha!

MAGIC 1- Accrylic Sign Paint from Consolidated Coatings 1-800-663-5690. Probably better product than Deka was. Flows better and no bubbles problem. You can ask Marj at Canadian Sign Supply, they carry that brand.

Like Mike, I use the Mack Water Base brushes (quills) - Series 2179, and find they work really well. They also have liners (Series 839) and flats (Series 2962). Before I started using these I was very sceptical of how they would perform, but now I am comfortable with them. Not really good, just comfortable.
As far as paint, here I must put in my usual unsolicited testimonial for Gary Anderson's line of 100% acrylics under the name of Rhino Paint Co. I don't think that you will find any water based paint that will cover in one coat while hand lettering, but they dry so quickly that double coating can be done almost immediatley.
For information, give Gary a call - 812-332-2033. He has a lot of other paint related stuff. I believe that he also sells the brushes by Mack.
Not only will you get all the information you need about latex paints, you will also get to talk to one of the nicest and most humble people in our craft. Don't plan on making it a quick call though. I called Gary yesterday just to say Hi and it took about 90 minutes. The problem is that we both like to talk. If you are pressed for time be sure that you don't mention anything about Frank Lloyd Wright.

Duncan, how's it going?? Just going down to use your old electropounce on a pattern... putting SignRider on the back of BIG TOP!
Re:waterbased paints/brushes... I can't say enuf good about the Hannukaine/Mack line of brushes! I 've got a set or two for water...couple sets for oil based. I do lots of latex paint lettering on show sets/signs... real good. Canadian Signcrafters has em'. Good to know about Magic one being from them too. No local outlet here for it...Loomis(ex Behensens) is hopeless. Too bad Deka is gone, good colours n' gloss.
Still, don't drink your brush wash!!

John, try your local Benjamin Moore dealer. I'll try and find the info my Benny Moore dealer gave me on the Magic1 paints. You should find them quite easily as they are based in Delta if I remember correctly.
Only took a couple minutes and I found the info sheet. Contact Magic1 at Consolidated Coatings, 7651 Vantage way, Delta. 1-800-663-5690 or 604-946-7626, or on the web at consolidatedcoatings.com

Paints: I've been using up my stock of Deka paints, and I've recently purchased some of Ronan's AquaCote. So far i'm not impressed with the Ronan, but maybe i need to try some other colors. Their white has a purple tint and didn't cover half as well as Deka. (Took three coats over a solid green banner... and looked chalky).
Brushes: Luco makes a 100% synthetic brush, called the LucoGold. Its a gold taklon brush. Dick Blick used to carry it, and so did Esoteric and QH&F. I learned about them from Rick at Esoteric (he was using some to lay down size). Different characteristics than the Mack water-based brushes (ox + squirrel + synthetic) which I also have. The gold Tacklon is great because it washes out easily.
I've also got some Langnickel Nocturna brushes that I use for acryllic paints, and I like them too. They seem to hold more paint than the Macks, but they dont seem to chisel out as nicely. I think they have more ox, less synthetic, so they sort of fluf up from the water. I use them for lettering on rougher surfaces (awnings, walls).
How about ADDITIVES? I've had no success with Floetrol -- it just seems to make the paint less opaque. Butch Anton used to use RapidTac -- not sure why, but it seems to work.
