Hey,
I'm getting ready to do my first mixed media banner on 10oz. What's the best and cheapest paint to use on vinyl. All input will be greatly appreciated

Make the banner "enamel receptive by using "TiCoat" or similar. (Most any acrylic will work)...then use 1Shot.

Others will say to use silk screen vinyl inks. (I find that 1Shot covers much better)

Werks fer me!

For painting over vinyl, I clear it with One Shot UV Clear and then paint with One Shot Lettering Enamels.

I use TiCote from chromatic, cover your whole banner, test as per instructions on can for adhesion.

It is made for this exact application

Etch banner with lacquer and then TopCoat for excepting One-Shot.....
You can also airbrush with (Auto Createx) with Bond and Catalyst....

10 oz banner is something you would not give a long warranty to but great for the short term use.

Steve,
I think you may be asking a question other than what we're replying to. The cost of the paint is negligable, no matter which brand you use. You'll only need an ounce or two of the paint (unless you're doing a huge banner or doing a solid color background).

Waterbased paints will require no priming, but they are a bit harder to work with. Alkyd (oil based) paints are what most of use here are used to using, but they require TiCote or other primer, plus you'll need some cleaner (thinner) and probably some reducer. You need a different type of brush for either type of paint.

1-Shot is the usual paint, and its expensive... about twice as much as "house paints" if you buy a whole quart ($15 to $30 depending on the color). but you only need 1 ounce - which works out to a buck fifty (or less). You can buy it in 4 oz (quarter pint) containers, so you don't have to buy much at a time (depending on the color, they cost about $5 to $10 each). The Ti-cote is about $20/quart, so its a bigger up front cost than the paint. You'll probably use more of it, too. A quart will do at least a dozen banners, so each banner is only costing you $3 for the paint and primer. Thats a lot less than the cost of the banner itself, and probably less than the cost of vinyl lettering and application tape.
