I was asked to do up a design for water bottles to be given to the players attending the baseball championships our town is hosting. Because this is the team my kid plays on, a non-profit organization and a bitty job I didn't charge. The sports store that they ordered them through, doesn't do email [Roll Eyes] so he gave me the email address for the printing place. I sent an eps file with the logo and the wording Midget Baseball 2003 Provincial Championships on it. Along with the attachment I sent the following message
"***** from ****** asked me to send this file to you. This is the imprint that the Holdfast Minor Hockey would like on the water bottles they ordered. Please acknowledge receipt of this email, as I was unable to read the address clearly." My mistake was the word Hockey in the message.
***** was on holidays and so an employee OK'd the artwork the printer sent them. I guess the printer changed the wording on the bottles to Hockey. ****** phoned me and asked me if we could make a deal - he'd give me the wrongly worded bottles at cost?????? So I should fork out $400 for a job someone else screwed up - I think not - so how responsible am I? The printers had the file that I said was the "imprint" we wanted - they never did acknowledge the receipt of the email I sent, and if it wasn't clear why wouldn't they email me for clarification? [Confused] I think that the responsibility is mainly that of the printers, although the sports store did authorize the artwork - SIGH what a way to start the week! [Frown]

Sounds "cut and dried" to me. They didn't follow the instructions which you gave them in black and white. They evidently got the message but why didn't they reply? Is the original email in your sent files? You might want to save it for proof.

BTW, made my customers a new sign out of HDU. We'll see if the woodpeckers attack that!

I like that "cut and dried" lol. Thanks Wayne.
Having lost my woodpecker Army, I've been training a contingent of post whittling beavers. If I were you I'd be using metal posts in case they go AWOL like the woodpeckers. Thats as long as my prairie gopher diggers don't get there too.

I think it's cut and dry to, but when I send something out on email, I always follow-up with a fax of the layout, and fed-ex a sample in color, and get a layout sent back of the final, to cover myself, I have had to many problems just relying on email, especially in a rush, we recenly ate a 2500 bucks on a sign when a vendor sent email pics of the sign to approve, the client wanted us to approve it that way, we did and it ended up being wrong. All in all I should have insisted on driving the 2 hours to see the sign, it would have been way cheaper.

Kelly,
The printer eats this one.
Pure and simple.
It's a typo.
I printed over 600 t-shirts once for a memorial road race. The design and typesetting was done in house. It had be checked several times, but a typo still made it thru and the whole run was a loss (plenty of white test shirts, tho) because we made the mistake, not customer.
When you subcontract a job, you are a representative of the end customer as well. You're using someone else to complete a project, and if they make a blunder like that, you should not be responsible for absorbing the costs, even if it's "only" materials.

Rapid
PS: I'm still trying to get the termites in the wood shed to work on engravings, but they keep holding out for more money... [Razz]

Thanks Ray - What gets me is the fact that this isn't even something I ordered - I just did someone a favor!

Hi Kelly,

I sent you an email but it bounced back to me. They changed your artwork without your approval. They
shouldn't have done that. It shouldn't cost you
anything for their mistake.

Only my humble opinion of course!

Well, it looks like the printer now has a ton of water bottles to give away as an example of their abilities. lol.

You worded exactly what you wanted. You sent the exact file. You shouldn't have to foot the bill just because some idiot at the printer can't read or doesn't have the common sense to ask if there is a question.
