Another sign shop has asked me to "repaint a neon sign". Turns out its actually a backlighted awning. The background color is black and the logo color is blue (I didn't pick 'em!). I'm guessing this was done with eradicatable awning fabric, so I won't be doing THIS job.
but,
I wanted to know how one might approach this sort of work in the future? are there special transparent awning fabric paints? do you eradicate using a chemical? i don't know nuttin about the process, and i don't remember seeing any magazine articles or postings here either.

just got thru with one here it needed a new logo on it for a new client. I took some eradication fluid and made a mask for my logo then wiped the areas for the new logo clean. After that I just used vinyl ink for the background and left the area that was to be backlit white.In your case I would assume that the copy would have to be done in translucent vinyl to get the backlit effect.
I would do a search for cooleybrite eradication fluid and find a supplier near you. the stuff is fairly expensive but it will do the job,just make a mask and wipe off the areas ya want eradicated.

Eradicable awning material does require the companion remover, otherwise use GripFlex translucent paints.

scooter,.....i do all the graphics for a local awning company and have done many cooley awnings....i use the cooley brand mask and use lacqure thinner as the solvent........(wear a respirator)...never had a problem......but ya do have to be very careful ...and cover all the awning under the graphic.....if the solvent gets on the fabric , the color is gone !!......being slow and sure is real important with this process.......vance
