Can anyone tell me the best way to go about making a flat black paint? I tried a test with the chromatic flattening paste, but at 1:1 it's really not very flat. Do I need to go Higher with the flattener ratio,(But how will this effect the durability) or should I just use the Chromatic flat paint?

Just out of curiousity have you tried Chalkboard paint, it only come in 2 colors black and green. Heck, Klylon even makes it in a spray can. Do a search on http://www.google.com This paint are what some persons these days are using on their vehicles for hot rod black.

I agree about the Chromatic Flattening Paste -- it doesn't flatten all that much. IIf you're just doing a background, I'd probably go buy some flat exterior paint from your hardware store. If you want a chalkboard surface, then you should use chalkboard paint. (I use Kemp brand -- it seems to hold up well for exterior applications).

Scooter, I think your reply is confusing and also you may be a little mis-informed. Chalkboard paint is not just for chalkboards and Chromatic flattening agent isn't the only game in town. All flattening agents whether made for urethanes, enamels or what have you, work in all paints. For a flat color such as black, there are a couple ways to achieve it, but the best way is to use a flat black paint and not all paints will last without chalking if you know paint is all about. You can also use a mattę clear for any color including black which takes us back to more work and more time. Chalkboard paint may have the solution to a flat finish which lasts and the prices of such a paint are kept at a minimal. (Lasts) is the key word for usage when doing signage. Hope this helps those who don't experiment beyond the use of a keyboard. When we do right no one remembers, when we do wrong no one forgets.
