I was at the meet last January at Joey's and he saw me doing some mold making...
seeing this he ask me if I could possibly replicate the tank pictured below that he uses for airbrushing on to show folks of samples of his work...
Well...to make a long story short, I took a mold off one and here she is!
I must determine how many of these guys must be produced to determine how many molds I need to make...and after this, I will no longer make them again...
SO...I am not looking for money right now but if you commit to them, I will expect you to get them once completed!...
I will charge 40.00 each and they will be ready for final sand. I really don't know what shipping will be but It will be determined by demand.
I have current commitments of 50 units so it will be a little while before they are done...just enough time to save up your money if ya want one!
OK LAVALEE...GET MY REFRIG READY!...BE READY TO TAKE A TRAILOR BACK NEXT SPRING UNLESS YOU WANT EM SOONER!
OH...they are actual tank size!...just half tank
and here is Joey's Board that he created using these parts.
So..there ya go...going to take orders thru July 20th...and if there is someone else out there that would like to repro them after that, I can pass em the mold for the rubber cost...I just want my refrig first lavalee!

awww Dennis....would ya please post a warning when you're getin' ready to say something like that?? I almost choked on my coke!!
Robert, thanks for once again coming up with something that I didn't even know I needed... now I'm sittin' here wondering "how MANY do I need?"!!
p.s. you DID save me a couple of your panels from the Showdown meet, right?? If not....no problem. By the way, when i saw the title of this thread I thought the same thing Pierre did and, although I really don't need a tank, I could stand a good deal on a Hummer.

Thanks Robert!! I've gotta get down to Fred's in OKC sometime soon so I might as well drop by your shop & pick 'em up at the same time. I'll give ya a call.
Things have really been poppin' at the shop!! It finally dawned on me that things might progess a little faster if I quit tryin' to do so much myself!! Got some help in (even hired a housekeeper) & now things are really takin' off!! Remind me to tell ya 'bout the Spinalator table that I put in the showroom window!!

Casting fiberglass parts from a rubber mold? How well do the molds hold up from the exotherm and shrinkage of the polyester resin? Are you using gelcoat for the parts' surface finish or just raw resin?
I do a lot of fiberglass stuff and lots of resin casting, but I always use fiberglass molds for 'glass work and rubber for resin.. never even tried using a rubber mold for making fiberglass parts, I just assumed the rubber would allow the fiberglass to warp outta shape while curing. .. not to mention the gelcoat popping off the mold surface before the 'glass is laid in (I've had this happen even with rigid fiberglass molds)... also not to mention making rubber molds of truck fenders, hoods and other large stuff is cost prohibitive.

Wow...I forgot all about the fact you do this schtuff all the time...yep..you have even posted often on this..DUH!..
Well...bud...lots of folks are lookin for this kind of thing to do their thing on...darn stinky stuff!...
To answer your questions... and for anyone out there who wants to do it themselves... 1. I pulled a silicon mold (shore 70) off the form Joey had... 1a. No distortion if the wall thickness of the rubber is there. 2. I have always used rubber for my resin fiberglass castings...I even do my large cold cast bronze using polyester resin cuz it's much cheaper than urethane. The exotherm does not effect the rubber at all although I have catalized heavily sometimes solid and that can toast a mold!...LOL (Mike, you may know what I mean!...) 3. I spray a sandable gray gelcoat first...1/16 layer first...and it is stickin pretty good...then coming in with my resin...first with a wet resin, layin the cloth, then coming back with the resin mixed with calcium carbonate...brushed in mind ya to a 1/8 wall thickness and you have no heat issues in setup...so much surface area to dissipate the heat!... 4. I was going to pull one master and creat 5 hard molds for multiples...so it cuts down on labor...that onezy twozy stuff is not my bag!
and for anyone interested, I do think some folks out there in the airbrush world would buy up things like this for showin off on... Somethin to consider....like fenders, etc.
Y'all take the idea and run...I just have to get my frig from lavallee...and that is gonna cost me 30 tubs..hehehe.

wow shore 70 rubber? I'm using 40 and I thought that was pretty stiff. I just started using Smooth-On's "Sorta Clear 40" silicone. It's a platinum cure and is water white clear so you can pour completely over a model, then use a knife to cut the parting lines in right down to the model. The clarity allows you to see the model so you know where to cut!
