What's the present outdoor durability of Digital prints now? How much per sq ft does an edge print, scotchprint, or other inkjet print sell for? Are Scotchprints the best/most durable?
Thanks a whole heap.

I have an EDGE II and I also use Gregory, Inc. for 3M Scotchprints. For my in-house Edge printed jobs I use Estimate pricing software to compute the pricing so I really couldn't tell you a price/sf. Depends on what I am printing on and what I am printing with. Also depends on the complexity of the cut involved and the timeframe it is needed in. For the Scotchprints I multiply our cost by 2 or 2.5 depending on the client. Scotchprints are laminated (there are a few choices for that too) for outdoor use. Scotchprints can be done on different vinyls too. I just bought ten 4'x5.5' Scotchprints. Had them printed on 4mil Controltac with gloss laminate. We chose 4 mil because they are were installed on roll-off waste containers and will see quite a bit of scuffing.

Like Bryan, I also get my Scotchprints from Gregory. I double the price.
For Edge prints, I also use Estimate. I prefer to price "by the job" rather than by the sq. ft.
As for durability, the Edge prints will last between 3 to 5 years unlaminated (with the exception of pink - 2 years)on a vertical surface. If you laminate the Edge print with Gerber's UV Guard, the prints are warranted for 5 years on both vertical and horizontal surfaces. Naturally, the further north the prints are used, the less UV rays the prints are exposed to, thereby increasing the life of the prints.
Scotchprints are "rated" for 5 years. They used to be rated for 3 years until they started laminating them with a particular type of overlaminate. Read the fine print on this one.
Not everyone warrants the prints for 5 years, only "rates" the prints. Gerber is the only one I know that honors a warranty. The only requirement is to use all Gerber material - vinyl & foil. They do that because it is the only way they have to maintain quality control and avoid manufacture disputes with other companies.

Thanks very much Brian and Glenn. I had quoted a price of $200 design fee and $800 ($1000 for the job)for cutting and applying vinyl logos on a couple of horse trailers (two on each one). The customer informed me that he thought it should be $250 "set up" fee and $50 for each graphic (about 42''x42'' each in two colors)for a total cost of $450 for the job.
He says he pays $30 each for graphics on the truck doors for his communications cable business(they have a lot of trucks)and I'm assuming that's for each door. He says that's for three colors too. I told him that what he's buying are digital prints of some sort and he's buying them at a quantity price.I'll bet that doesn't include installation though.
Anyway, I wouldn't back off my price but told him that a Scotchprint might be less expensive. But even at that I don't think anyone in their right mind would design a logo and make four 42'x42'' Scotchprints of it, deliver and install them for $450.
What do ya think?
Dont you worry 'bout my prices What you think they oughta be They're close enough ta nuthin' Fer me.......eeeeeeeee!

After some of the stuff I've come across this week, anything is possible.
You may want to try this.....
Go to www.gregory1.com. From there, you should be able to download a pricing program geared toward the Edge and Scotchprints they produce. I have a copy of it installed in my computer and it shows a wholesale price of $425.50 for the 4 prints; and a suggested retail price of $638.25 (50% markup).
That being said, anyone doing that kind of work for $450 would be an idiot, IMHO.
However, a "Promoprint" from Gregory on their brand of cast vinyl would wholesale for $345.50 and retail for $518.25. The only problem is that Promoprints are "rated" for "up to" 3 years outdoors.

Thanks Glenn, You have been very helpful. I also checked with an outfit called SignMart and they quoted me a wholesale price of $320 for the same size. I didn't think to ask him if they were laminated or had app. tape.
But even at that price with a 50% markup it comes to $480 I certainly wouldn't do it for his price and then install it too.
For the price the customer informs me it should be (the $450 for the whole job) I would be designing the logo, ordering the Scotchprint, delivering and installing the four graphics for the GRAND WHOPPING TOTAL of $130.....and paying the shipping out of my own pocket. No thanks
Thanks again Glenn and Brian

My first question for him would be "What are you wasting my time for if you already know how much it should be and already have a source for it?".
I think the guy is full of crap, personally.
If there's 4 logos needed to be produced, and each one is 42x42 (12.25 sq ft), it breaks down to $200 each or $16.50/sq ft.. Now, just try and find anyone to sell Edge prints or ColorCAMM prints at that price.. it aint gonna happen.
I was charged roughly $19/sq ft ($75 total) wholesale for a single color Edge print at a local shop. I'da printed them myself but my ColorCAMM was being disagreeable that day and it was a rush order that had to be done. =)
