It is just the "flavor of the generation"!!!!

When I grew up it was KISS, Alice Cooper, and even Ozzy Osborne. My parents went nuts saying a lot of the same things that are said today about Eminem, Marilyn Manson, etc.

I still listen to all my heavy metal favorites and I still get told to "Turn it Down!!!!", only now instead of my parents....
It is my Kids saying it.

Picture this though.....

A grey haired old man starts yelling at his kids to turn that crap off and listen to some real music "In my day we listened to real music, now Ozzy, Areosmith and Metallica, NOW THAT'S MUSIC!!!!! he yells at the kids.

Sound fimilar???? Only in our day it was our parents telling us about Lawrence Welk and the like. Now the old grey guy is you and me, talking to our kids. [Wink]

Joe, ol' buddy, yer gettin old man [Smile] OK, I couldn't sit through Dumb and Dumber but Legally Blonde wasn't that bad though. Now as far as jackass, I'm way to old to appreciate that but I'm not so old I can't remember the stupid ass s**t that my friends and I did at that age. Jeez, if we had a camera and a chance to get on TV, I shudder to think of the crap we would have done [Smile] I visited with an old friend from that time period on my trip to Florida last month. I hadn't seen or talked to him in ages. We reminised about the dumb stunts we pulled. He said he felt bad about some of them and that we owed apologies to some folks if we ever ran accross them.....me, I still think that crap was funny as hell. I wouldn't do it now of course.
I look at the cars these kids drive and to me they look stupid, c'mon a rear wing on a front wheel drive???????? Then I think of the practcality of some of our high school rides, severly cut coils so the front bumper is a few inches off the ground, rear end jacked up to the upper atmosphere, tail pipes run straight out under the axle, yea, now that was good. You couldn't keep your shirt tucked in your pants for a half mile riding in those things.
The music? Same deal, most of what's out there now, to me, is pure crap, yet it sells like crazy. No different from any other time. We tend to remember Chuck Berry, the Beatles , Springsteen, yet there was all that other stuff, you know Pat Boone, and oh , those eighties "hair bands". I think music is in a bit of a slump right now, they are all to happy to copy one another, there's some good stuff out there, ya just have to dig for it.
I remember reading something long ago regarding a musician/songwriter, he said that if his music couldn't be understood by the old folks and it ****ed them off, he succeeded.

I guess time changes everything about kids and parents, but somethings never REALLY change....

Dad..."I used to walk to school 5 miles in a snowstorm. You kids have it so good these days
Me...I used to ride my bike to work 5 miles before I got my first car. You kids have it so good these days."
My son will probably saying this..."I used to wait forever to do my homework on dial up. You kids have it so good these days with DSL."

Troy,

You cracked me up and brought back memories...one day I was in my room (while I was in high school) listening to some classical music at a fairly loud volume. My father comes storming in from his studio and (only kidding of course) yells - for Chrissake! Would you turn that sh*t down - I can't hear my Jethro Tull!!!

Looking back, I laugh again, he was the age I am now.

I really feel old sometimes...most of the people I work with are under 25 - I feel like their den mother. The vast majority of them, I COULD be their mother. A song will come on the radio from the 90s and someone will say - oh I love this song, it was out when I was in 4th grade and I want to choke.

Bah! Quit yer whinin' you buncha nearly-deads! [Smile]

The more things change, the more they stay the same.

My dad always gave me a tough time about putting money into customizing trucks and audio systems, yet when he was a teenager he had a fast car and a top of the line radio. The difference now is, instead of FM stations, 8 tracks and stereo, these days it's satellite radio stations, DVD players/TV screens, surround sound and in-car computers.

Rear wings/spoilers on cars today are still just as useless as they were on cars back in the 70's, except today's kids know you also need a front spoiler to make the most of the downforce.. no sense in only using a rear wing when it's the FRONT wheels that STEER the car! [Smile] They take it another step with side skirts and rear diffusers, ie: actually funtional stuff.

Ozzy, Metallica, AC/DC, KISS, RATT, etc.. they aren't heavy metal anymore, they're Classic Rock. Granted I do prefer listening to that than the bubblegum POP crap.

OP- This is totally out of text, but I recall a quote from a greek (I think) philosophy course I had in college that went, in essence, something like this: "damn kids today- no ambition in life, no respect for their elders, playing music and dancing in bad ways, etc.- what will become of this world". 1600's! (Sorry Socrates for destroying your point, <or Hippocrates, etc.>, someone with a better memory bank than mine will know and, please, correct me).

When I turned 16 my parents had a big party for me- a friend gave me THE 1st Beatles album. My father took it away because hey, they were like soooo rad! He gave it back to me about 6 months later (still un-opened). The Beatles looked like the "Chipmunks" compared to what the Beatles spurred! He actually allowed me to see the Beatles (at the then Wringler Field) in Chicago on their first US tour.

Those very people have the Beatles "Trilogy", well, I'll be darned!

I have learned from teaching art in Rockford, IL, and then raising children of my own that we HAVE to let them GET out- just stay close. The old saying "the cream always rises to the top" is fine but I figure so does the "scum". I personally feel like this is a wonderful world- it's all in how you look at it. How 'bout we rewrite "Gone With the Wind" to todays standards? You and I probably wouldn't approve of the way howiewood would do it.

I understand how you feel, OP, and at times have my doubts on why kids are doing/ watching what they're in to but I have met some of the brightest young people recently- they're the ones that keep it turning.

What will elevator music be 20 years from now? Easy listening Marilyn Manson?

Will the oldies hip hop station be called K-RAP? Of course, that closely reflects my current opinion of that particular music genre.

Mike,

"Classic" is what happens when good things stand the test of time and are still enjoyed!!!!

Heavy Metal is a "type" of music that in my humble opinion will always be my favorite.
I listen to all types Country, Jazz, Blues and I hate to admit it but my son has me listening to a few of his (K)-rap songs.

I started listening to make sure what he was listening to was appropriate, and I can say I did enjoy a "FEW" of them.

One thing I find amusing is how their favorite group will come out with a new song. The kids go on about how they are the greatest for writing that song!!!! Only, that song has been around longer than I have, only mixed different.
Same thing I did when Motley Crew came out with "Smok'n in the Boy's Room" [Smile] I guess some people were amused at me as well....

BTW, Mike when you going to be in St. Louis again ???

Never, if I can help it. [Smile] hahaha.. j/k!

Actually I was there the first weekend this past May. I have a buddy that got married and just couldn't miss that one for the world, had to see it with my own eyes! [Smile] I also pulled a little surprise on my dad, I didn't tell him I was coming to town but I did tell him I had a surprise on its way to him and that he should keep an eye on his mailbox. Well, when he opened up his door, he sure was surprised!! then he says "Hey, that package never did show up." [Smile]

Speakin of Classics.. I saw "The Hulk" last weekend (it was OK, too dang long though at 2.5hrs) but they also showed a new movie trailer.. get this.. "The Punisher"!! Cant wait!!
