That is what the problem is...I just called the architect and that is what they are using....no wonder there are problems...I won't waste your time...but thanks.
I told him to reformat and send as a dxf or eps...
I'll let ya know if it works!

I had the architect reformat the drawing last night and send...what a monstrosity...They are asking us to refurbish a sign done back in the 20's....it should be interesting!
Thanks anyway!

This probably won't help for a .dwg file but I'll share something that I accidently stumbled onto while trying to open Illustrator files created on a Mac.
I could not open the vector files sent to me by the agency in my Illustrator 10 for PC, nor could I import them in Illustrator, Corel or Flexi.
I clicked on the attachment in my Inbox and got the window reading "Open Attachment Warning" with the question: "What would you like to do with this file?", which has the options "Open it" or "Save it to disk". I usually save it and then try to open or import it from the software. This time, I hit "Open it" and Illustrator launched with the file in all its vectored glory. I was then able to do all the manipulation I needed to it.
Launching Illustrator through the email somehow allowed the file to open, whereas Illustrator, by itself, would not do so. That is my computer weirdness story, your mileage may vary.

There is a news for any people using both Illustrator and Autocad :
Code Zebra has released its popular collection of technical symbols for use with Adobe Illustrator 10.
Thousands of unique symbols in 81 different libraries are available in Architecture, Building Services, Landscaping, Electrical, Mechanical, Fasteners, and General categories. Libraries can be purchased individually or in various industry-related collections for both Mac and PC platforms.
Illustrator users may now choose to create their architectural layouts, electrical diagrams and technical illustrations inside of Illustrator, rather than using Microsoft® Visio® or another separate diagramming application.

I also hope you are aware of this collection of plug-in's for AI. Rick Johnson has one called "Concatenate" .
Concatenate is a plugin filter for Adobe Illustrator that connects two or more paths into one continuous path. You tell it how close the endpoints should be to combine the paths, how close to tangent the endpoints must be, and whether to average the endpoints and control handles together. It's especially useful for cleaning up CAD drawings and EPS files that have been converted to Adobe Illustrator or, for example, connecting and filling state/country borders in vector map files.
