I fell in love with a hammered copper sign that I saw in an old SignCraft magazine. I told a customer about wanting to do one for their subdivision but have never done one. I'd like to show the pic to the customer but can't rmemeber what issue. Anyone remember?

Laura, there's a show on one of the educational channels called Modern Masters. I watched a fellow start with a flat sheet and wind up with a beautiful lamp shade. That is quite a skill.
You might check SignCraft's website. They have a list of past feature articles there. Vic G

One day while I was messing around, I discovered that if you hammer HDU with a ball pean hammer, you get an effect very similar to hammered copper. So I tried it on a painted sign, but it did not show up very well. So I'm sure you would need to leaf it to get the full effect. Your post here reminded me of it. Sorry to stray a bit.

One of my workers found the issue right away. Aren't those signs cool! And probably very cheap to make. Now I have to find a supplier for copper by the roll.

I've heard talk of people buying copper sheet from a supplier at anvilfire.com (don't know how to do the link thing).

I was talking with a fella a couple of years ago that made hammered copper pieces for his signs. What he did was carve his shape out of MDF and then lay the copper over top and pound it to the shape with a ball-pien hammer. I believe that he used oversized copper sheets and then cut then to shape after the dimension was pounded.

i love any copper work....its such a maluble metal. in grade school we did thse little 4x6 wall hangings of different things, indian, horse, buffalo, etc. they were a plastic relief, of the object, and it had this sheet of thin copper you secured at one end, a wooden stick with a not real sharp point. you put the copper over the relief, and with the wood stick you reproduced that shape in the sheet of copper. then when you where done the teacher mixed up some chemicals, and we brushed it on the copper....and all the real low spots turned almost black, then some green and after it sat 10-15 minutes we wiped it all off with paper towels....and these thing were beautiful....looked like they were 100 years old!!!
