Hey y'all.
First job to quote where I am needing to mark up a fair bit of Lexan ( Actually White polycarbonate ). Would I use the same equation to get me lexan price that I would for vinyl, coro, mdo and such, Just with the higher price, I wasn't sure is the mark up goes down a little.

Hypethetically, if I mark up my vinyl ( multiplying my cost per yd x 1.667 or such)+ GST...wouldn't the mark up be astronomical for such an expensive AMOUNT of lexan, Tuffak..material??
What is standard "sign shop" sq.ft. charging price in your shop fer' lexan?

Hi Corey,

I think you'll find a variety of answers. For me, I pretty much mark up everything the same ammount, unless its a tiny thing. for instance, i mark up digitally printed banners by 40%, but if its just a 2' x 3' digital print i'll put a minimum mark up of $60 on it (otherwise its not worth the tiny ammount i'd make).

part of the markup is covering your time and effort, part of it is paying you some profit, and part of it is "insurance" on the job, and part of it covers the waste.

if your piece of plastic breaks while you're making the sign, you're going to have to replace it out of pocket. your markup is helping to cover that. if you took a smaller markup, youd be screwed. more expensive materials have potentially more expensive problems.

if it were a HUGE job, with 20 pieces of plastic, then maybe you'd take a slightly smaller markup on the materials. for a "typical" job, take a standard markup.

finally, its just _easier_ to take the same markup on everything. less to worry about, less to second guess yourself over.

I generally use the same mark up on all the materials I use, but I'm only using mostly vinyl and some paint/ink. I mark most vinyls up by 300% to cover the actual material cost, the cost to replace/restock that material, and the shipping.

I use a little plexiglas here and there and depending on the amount used I'll mark that up by 50%-300%. 300 for teeny jobs, 50% for large jobs (like a 4x8 of 3/4" thick plexi which I use for etching logos in car audio installations).

It mostly depends on the amount needed for the job and if the mark up results in a final price that's way out of line whether it's too high or too low.
