You can etch aluminum using ferric chloride instead of the copper crystals. It etches deep enough to allow a nice paint fill. Place the aluminum plate on a slight incline and allow the solution to be pumped down the face. Unlike the copper solution, the ferric solution will not from a build up of muck which impeaded the etching on the sample they showed causing it to be imperfect. By the way, the spent solution will contain dissolved heavy metal and cannot go down the sewer. EPA ya know.
