Central Illinois or Wisconsin? both meets sound great, both are far away (so i'd need a plane ticket either way), and both are about the same costs. i can't afford to go to both...
any thoughts on which event is better for a person wanting to improve his lettering skills?

Look into the "French kiss a brush" meet. You want to learn from the best? Look at the talent that has already said they were going to Quebec. The host, Pierre Tardif, Doug Downey, Nettie Balough, Barb and Steve, Bob Darnell... Whew! What a line up...
Besides, you can take advantage of the exchange rates. When's the next meet going to be in Quebec? Probably never. It might but why take a chance?
Great people, good food, signs, and golf. Man, count me there! You should, too.
Have a great one!

Perhaps it is unfair for me to post, as we are hosting the Wisconsin meet, but I just wanted to put my two cents in here. We have always looked at which artist were attending the meet first, then we decided where we wanted to go. There was a situation where we went to Canada v.s the states meet. We enjoyed it to its fullest. This year, we too will be at the Illinois meet, and Bill & Jane are also registered to come to our meet. If you have not already done so, please visit the web sites listed on the brochures, & we will meet you at one of them for sure. . . Thanks!

After hitting my first meet at Mass Mayhem, I definitely wanted to hit a summer meet. Although Quebec is fairly close, I've never been out of the eastern time zone in my 42 years on this planet, so I felt heading to LetterRip in Atlanta would make a great excuse to finally do some travelling.
I'm going to head out a couple of days early and drive out, making a vacation out of the trip. I'm planning on stopping in at the American Sign Museum on the way back, and maybe a a quick stop in Atlantic City to boot.
Also, I usually get a quiet spell after the 4th of July, so clearing the schedule is easier.

Look closely at the meets. You need to look at and weigh a few things. First, see what acitivies are planned (workshops). See who else is going (is there someone already signed up that you would especially like to meet or watch, someone who is known for some part of the craft and you just want to know "how do they do that"?)Look at costs (of meet, travel, room) and at dates of the meet. Look at the area. Is one an area you would like to see more than another? You have to look at all the factors of each and make the personal decision for yourself. I wouldn't put much weight into what the area was like 35 years ago. I'm thinking of going to Quebec because of the timing and some friends are going, but I need to think about it more. We have a vacation scheduled for 2 weeks before that.

OK Scooter! It's time to sell my stuff! French Kiss A Brush would be an excellent choice for many reasons.
First: the WORKSHOPS and the PROJECTS. Todd Hanson, Russ Mowry and Matt Burfield will take care of the pinstripping and vehicle graphics. Francis Lestingi who was feature in the last Sign of the Times magazine and will be in the next Signcraft will be demonstrating his techniques on Casting and Molding. John Hodgins will screen print the meet aprons and show the process from A to Z. 3 nice carved and guilded signs designed by Nancy Beaudette will be completed during the week-end. Pete Payne will also demonstrates glue-chipped and guilding on glass. Doug Downey with his laptop will show a few tips on designing. An exhibition of old signs and antiques wood tools(see the topic: "FKAB Letterheads: Must See Signs Exhibition") We also have 300 feet of windows to be splashed! Not talking about the panel jam! And this only what is planned now, I am sure that many attendees will have something to teach or to show as it happens in every Letterheads.
Second: the FOOD will be terrific, all real-canadian breakfasts with eggs, ham, sausages, bacon, toast, pancakes...a tasting of the famous POUTINE, the finest sausages ever! a spaghetti dinner, pâté chinois, walleyes entrées. The meet is sponsored by Molson brewery, so beer will be available at the meet site...bring your Malox!
Third: the CITY, the meet site is located 5 minutes from the famous Old Quebec City one of the nicest city in north America. Two guided tour are planned on saturday night and sunday afternoon. Most of the american tourists says about Quebec that it is like travelling in Europe without crossing the ocean! ALSO, a shuttle is planned all week-end and will travel the peoples from their hotel to the meet site and also to the entertainment! so you don't need to rent a car. Fee: $90 U.S. including all meals, a T-Shirt, an apron, the fun and all the learning. I hope i forget nothing!
Life is so good!

Well Scooter...I had the same dilema. I wanted to hit the Wisconsin meet, to see a lot of old friends from up that way (Dave, Reverend Jeff, John...hey you Dairyland freaks!). I also think that it's going to be a great meet.
I also wanted to make it to Quebec...I'm sure Pierre is going to host a great meet as well. It sounds like it's gonna be fun.
And while I was sitting here, my head in my hands, questioning WHY there are two meets the same weekend...with so many other weekends available..it hit me.
I CAN'T GO TO EITHER! I'm going to be working the SignGold Booth at the B.I.G. show in Orlando that same weekend.

Can't speak for the others, but the Quebec meet is sure to be a wild and crazy time. Pierre is a certified wackjob, it is sure to be a blast. Wish I could go. Sounds like Donald has hairdo envy.

What I wouldn't give to be able to go to Quebec! I've been to Quebec City before and it is an amazing city. Somebody do me a favor and give Russ Mowry a big hug from me. He was one of my dad's dear, dear friends. And a hell of a signpainter to boot!
This was his gift to my dad for his 49th birthday...the inside is even cooler than the outside but doesn't photograph well.
I'm sure that any of the meets would be wonderful to go to but Pierre's gets my vote and I don't even drink beer!

Hi all. I agree with Laurie. I'm going to look forward to meeting her husband and her as we go to each other's meet. It's probably unfair of me to post as we are co-hosting the meet in Illinois. Our meet is going to be heavy on the walldog end of our craft as we are trying to get further connected with the Rt 66 phenomenom. The Rt 66 corridor is a fascination for not only Americans but also tourists from around the world. This famous road has provided a source of income for countless sign makers over the years and it is in part a tribute to these craftsman that we are assembling in Atlanta this summer.
When we finish I hope we will leave this small town with a true shot in the arm. So many small towns across the country are losing their schools to consolidation, and their young people leave home never to return. It's sad that we're losing this bit of Americana. In our humble attempt if we can shine the chrome on this particular town and other towns in the future, we can all walk away from these events feeling good about ourselves and our craft. We're trying our darndest to get some media attention to what we're doing so that future meets can be free for those that work on the projects.
I agree that it's a good idea to go check out those whose work you admire, but that should not be your only reason to go to a meet. I really think every meet--even the very smallest gathering has much to offer. I have always enjoyed the fellowship and learning exchanges that take place. In my mind it has helped me to become better at my trade. Hopefully my work will continue to improve and being around fellow letterheads insures this.
Most people that organize these meets put in countless hours trying to get them organized. Their rewards are few. Until you've hosted one you could only imagine. I say attend as many meets as you can to help support these folk's efforts. Put the money thing out of your mind, because its not only a deductible expense, it's a shot in the arm. If you walk away from a meet with brand new enthusiasm then you've just given your business a boost. You'll also make new friends, reinforce old friendships and possibly make some business contacts along the way.--Bill

Hiya Scooter, Any Letterhead meet is a good experience and a business expense. Which one to choose is a tough call an can be made only by you. My first meet was the international meet hosted by Jay Allen back in '97. While it was a great event and an awesome experience, I found it to be a little overwhelming. The smaller meets I attended since, have been just as much fun and more educational. Like the others mentioned, see what's lined up and choose from there. If one event has more of the skills offered that you're interested in, the choice should be simple. If you want a broader experience, a larger event will be more to your liking.
Havin' fun,

Hey Scooter- A lotta Mars folks will be at Pierre's meet, if that holds any weight, and as far as I know, there are no evening trains running in Quebec! No matter where you go, you'll learn something & have fun. Take care, big guy. Love- JILL

Jane here.... If you want to learn hand lettering, I'm sure all these meets will be good. I guess it is a matter of what KIND of substrate you want to learn on. I can only speak for our meet, and we will have a panel jam area and pinstriping area obviously, but we will also be lettering on brick, aluminum & concrete walls. Nancy Bennett's project will be reverse painting on clear plexi which is simething I've never tried. If you decide on Atlanta in July, remember to bring your waterbase and oilbase brushes so that you can try both. We have quite a few hand lettering attendees that would be able to work with you and quite of few committee members, seminar members and project panel leaders that you can check out at www.letterrip.org Hope we see you this summer!! Oh and if you DO decide to come, get your registration in before June 13th and save $. Also if you call for motel reservations, make SURE you mention you are a letterhead. a few motels hae closed registration to everyone except letterheads.

Pierre, I am still dreaming that I will be able to get away to your meet. I remember something about the limitation on the number of spaces available. Can you re-post some info about those limitations & where you are now with pre-registered attendee's.
I can't say if I will be able to make it but I don't want to be racking my brain trying to manifest that outcome past a point where it is no longer an available option. Partly the travel expense, but mostly the group decision making dynamics of having a new wife make it more difficult for me to just sign up on a whim.
