anyone using Gerber graphix advantage? Do you know which design software other than corel to use with it? Does it matter?

Also, if you could help me out here, I wondered if there was a series of clipart that works well with Gerber G.A. 6.2 or should I just use the corel and save it as eps file?

My gerber can open and cut adobe files but I was wondering since I don't have adobe, and probably won't for quite a while, is there something you use for design other than corel, that is fairly inexpensive and would have a variety of tools and vectorized clipart? And where would I buy it?

Deb, there used to be dedicated 'Graphix Advantage Art Libraries', they were quite pricey but having just enquired about availibility (no answer yet) I was told if available they should cost about £34 per topic (building, tools, garage services, landmarks etc.)They used to £143 each!
Also don't overlook the design features of GA itself. Certain features leave corel standing:
Outline
Shade & relief shade
Shadow & relief shadow
Also distortion presets can be pretty useful and are cumulative.

What do you have against corel?

I've been using the GA/Corel combo for years ... sometimes have to use Illustrator for the odd supplied file but peronally prefer (know my way around) Corel.

I don't use much but the clip art collections made for signmakers (vector art etc.) are really the only ones GA can tolerate without going through Corel first.

Deb,
I have been using GA for a long time and I can answer this question for you. GA can import EPS and AI files with no problem, but of course the clip art itself has to be designed to work with cutters to be of much value. You can buy all kinds of clip art collections that were designed to be "printed", and for the most part, I have found them to be worthless for plotting and cutting--but fine for printing and "idea starters".

The ornament packages we sell were designed to be plotted and cut, and in fact include native GA 3.6 and 6.2 format images, along with CorelDraw and EPS and AI file formats. I believe Vector Art offers similar features. Don Coplan's Ruby Collection imports correctly as AI. Just make sure you buy clip art and ornament packages that were digitized to be used with cutters, routers and plotters and you will be fine in GA.

Good luck,
Mike Jackson

Mike Jackson says it well.

The only thing I can add is that, sometimes imported clipart either will not take an outline or, the outline will not accurately follow the line. Most of the time when this happens, adding a node or two makes the problem go away. No idea what causes this. Vic G

Another program to think about is Adobe Streamline, a tracing program that generates vector art in just two mouse clicks.

You can usually find it as a stand alone program.

Thanks, thanks thanks!!! Arthur, Mark, Mike, Vic, Ray [Smile] . I needed to get past the painting and into the vinyl that I have been avoiding, but progress must go on.

As always, I am honored that you find the time to help me, as I should have probably asked before this. Heck, I do use the distortions and shadows quite a bit in the GA. I refer to corel and clipart rarely since some are only used for printing, but good for resources so I will use them more.

You have answered all my questions, indeed!

And thank you for the advice about the brands. I am not ready for Don's ruby collection or Mike's Golden collection, but drool at the quality and eyecandy. It will be soon that I am ordering from you. As for the run of the mill, wedding cake or fruit basket, I would draw it but my scanner is acting up quite a bit, and I am just learning to digitize. Shoot, my customer only wants vinyl this time, as it was a deal made by a body shop owner which we couldn't wiggle out of for the time frame (handled poorly) but trying to make the best of this for now, on this job, finding out how little I knew about corel capabilities with Gerber.
There are a few great friends also from the bb that have offered help concerning this and what we have come up with is the interesting fact that gerber is sensitive to what it looks for in the paths, sometimes, as you have mentioned also. An individual characteristic that gerber has, a learning experience that things just aren't the same all the way across the board.

I go about this from a DIFFERENT slant.
Using scanner and printer.
I print,from all kinds of resourses.Such as...
Goggle Search,Free Logos,or a collection(mourge)
of printed ideas.

After print is completed,I "trace" via tracing paper with Flair type pen.
Scan my tracing into composer.
Ungroup all,highlight my object needed.
Group together, move high lighted object away from
area(or copy,move to NEW file)
Paste to new file in composer.

I then send to output.
Cut vinyl in BLACK
Weed,smooth edges with Exacto knife.
ReScan to vector, and use as nessesary.

Hope this helps

There's no shortage of good quality vinyl-ready clipart available. In addition to what's been mentioned, there's:

Plotter Art from my company

OCA Enterprises (about 24 volumes and currently having a serious sale)

Smart Designs

Ad-Art Innovation Multimedia

The suggestion of Adobe Streamline should be taken seriously as well. The application which sells for about $120 is SUPERIOR to everybody elses autotracing. When used in conjunction with an image editor like Adobe PhotoShop or Corel PhotoPaint you can get a near hand digitized quality vinyl-ready AI file from almost any piece of non-vinyl-ready clipart in just a couple of minutes.
