I am completing a starting line for our local race track. This was composed of (4) 20in.X 96in. MDO boards. We also installed. They requested vinyl and with the colors they selected( 3 colors layered ) it took right at 50 yds. of material. We also put the vinyl edging, after it was installed. When I started figuring the price, I almost hit the floor myself. Keep in mind I don't do many big jobs, which this was for me. I usually do 10mm Coloplast for $150.00 unless it requires digital prints. What do you think is a fair price for this job? My husband does race at this track every week and we are stockholders but I refuse to do things at cost.

I'm confused too. Do you mean $595 for all 4 signs or $595 each? I'd say 4 for that price is too low and the other is too high for one. But then again I haven't seen how much copy, does it have a complicated logo, etc...so I GUESS it's hard to answer your question....

Was the MDO painted already or did you have to do that and did you have to cut the 4x8's down to size? Was there a lot of copy on the signs?
You say three color registration? cheap vinyl or high performance?

Based on your description I doubt I would have touched the job for less than $800.

Just out of curiosity, how do you arrive at any of your pricing of your sign work?

Where did you aquire your business knowledge from before entering the sign business?

It makes a big difference in what you should be getting for your work.

Your right I didn't give enough information. The MDO board had to be sealed and painted. The vinyl used was Oracal 651. The font used was decorated 035. Nothing fancy, no logo just the name of the track. Two 20in. X 96In. boards, that we had to cut, were sealed, sanded, and 2 coats of outdoor paint on them. (sanded between each coat) I know that it could have been painted but the weather here has been so wet that the track decided on vinyl to save on drying time. These two boards are put together on one side of the track. The other two boards, the same thing was done to them, are placed on the other side and then attached to a guard rail. I could get nasty about what business background I have and how much business experience I have but I won't. I tried to stress that this is not a regular job I was doing but a job that I was not doing for nothing. We are stockholders and I don't want to make a regular profit on this job. I usually price cost X 5 for regular jobs. I figure I have $285.00 in material. [Roll Eyes]

A general rule of thumb for me is $12.50 sq ft for MDO. Add 50% if DS. This is for medium copy-two colors. Keeping in mind what your shop rate is, figure out how long it will take to cut and sand the edges. If your shop rate is $60. an hr. and it takes 20 minutes each to cut and sand, then throw in $20. cut fee. If I don't know what to charge for installation, I try to figure out how long it will take and apply the same principle.

Hi Cynthia...Using your own thinking of 5x cost you are way losing money on the job! BUT you Are making SOME money and if you folks are associated with the track and want to help out, that's fine.

Personally, I am with Joe...
