Hi Friends, I am having a problem with some of my cd's cracking, they are cracking from the center out. Anyone know what could be causing this? I already lost my corel graphics cd, and one of my vector art cd's, that one I caught before the cracks got to far and copied it. Thanks Terry

Are you using them in laptop? Some laptop batteries get extremely hot while charging, in my PC tech days I have seen cds crack and or the foil seperate when the cd is left in the laptop drive for long periods of time. I don't know the situation of yours, just a thought.

Terry, I have not had this happen to me yet, but I always have thought that the way the center drags out of the case could cause one to break. This could have been from a time increased cracking from when it way earlier cracked by doing this. Some cds come out very hard when they are new. Bronzeo

Jack, I have wondered about that happening with removing from the case too. I havent had it happen so far. I do know people who have hugh music CD collections and they put the CDs in those large book like cases where they just slip in a sleeve. I have also read that a lot of CDs will last no more than 5 or 10 years. There have been some tests done and i have lost the url that showed the results. It has a lot to do with the materials used to make them. I do remember they said Kodak Gold and about 4 others were excellant. I think one was TDK but only remember the Kodak for sure.

bought the laptop....and was lookin at the cd's that came with it...the rescue cd had a crack fron center hole halfway to outside.....ive had other crack also ..have a cd burner...and have had a couple crack while writing...also these 48-50x readers might have some thing to do with the stress on these flimsy plastic discs....they are not "balanced" for high speed...sorta like youre car tires, you have no problems with vibration till you reach 50-60 mph..same with a cd spinning on an axis.....

It's a combination of time and temperature inside the drive.
If you arent using the CD, take it out of the drive. If the CD is left in the drive and you arent using it, the drive is still spinning and generating some heat.
The constant stress on the disc in conjunction with heat fluxuations causes the cracking.
When removing CD's from their jewel cases, you need to press down on the teeth that grip the CD's hub. If your CD is already brittle from heat and stress, that little added pressure can be enough to snap it.

Wow ... first time I've heard of that one. I'll have to give my cd's a closer look. I got tired of changing cd's a while back, and for a while I toyed with the idea of using a cd jukebox, then reality set in when I priced one. The solution was easy - I copied all my clipart cd's, auto-library cd's and font cd's to a hard drive. Searches run much faster, and I'm not worried about misplacing cd's or damaging them anymore. A 20 gig drive will hold about 31 cd's worth of data (uncompressed).

Terry, I feel your pain. The method by which I just cracked my Sign DNA CD was this: My kids were playing Tonka Workshop & took my CD out, laying it on the counter. The other morning I went out to the office to start cuttin that demon vinyl, and boxes of Calon II that I had stacked on my overstuffed filing cabinets fell on my head, thus knocking my Sign DNA CD off & onto the concrete floor. It shattered into 3 pieces! WAAA! I know it is my fault for being careless. Oh, for the good old days, when I didn't have to use vinyl or CDs or anything but One-Shot and a good #8 quill. Oh, well. At least my Pop Tart remained intact! Love- Jill
