Hi all,

What kind and/or brand of vinyl do you use/recommand for a rear window?

Same new cars have self-cleaning glass! Have you done some bad experiences with them!

On a new Mercedes Vito (van), my ScotchCal letters were wipped down in 3 weeks!

Need advice!

I'm also going to add to the question...

We are thinking about a full graphic on the back window of the mustang, but what about the defroster wires and how that works?

For simple text and smaller graphics i have used only cast material and had no problems with defrosters and or wipers. Make sure that the corners are not very sharp as the wipers will try to peel them back. as for a full blown graphic, that covers your field of view, on the back window i have installed several that were printed on perferated vinyl (clear view) and had very little problems. the main thing to keep in mind is that the window and blade need to be wipped down or rinsed before using the wiper blade if the window has eccessive dirt on it.

If you printed the lettering in 'mirror' and installed on the inside of the window would that help?

Sometimes I use this technique, but how to do when the window is darkened by a solar filter?

Bob, you must have used a Brand of perforated film other than Gerber, Gerber only warranties this film for 1 year. and it does not like Wiper blades at all. I've used Gerber perforated film with gerber foils dozens of times and it faded very fast, every time. But for short term promotional use, less than a year it's fine!

most perforated window films only offer one year Warranty. The sheer nature of the materials (half holes/half vinyl) leads to adhesion problems.

Many manufacturers recommend using a clear laminate overtop of the perf window film to stop dirt, water, snow, ice and whatever else from welling up in the holes. Many graphics companies however don't laminate due to the added cost.

Rear defrosters will cause the perf window fil to fatigue in the spot where the defrost line is quicker---it's been my experience that many vinyls have the same thing happen.

With regards to rear window wipers, many installers tell the customer that the rear wiper must be removed from the vehicle to afford the perf window film any sort of durability.

With standard vinyls, much the same thinking applies. Not taking the wiper off could affect the longevity of the vinyl. Ice scrapers are havoc on vinyl on windows for the same reason, just a more severe example.

Yes, it's very important that the customer is made aware of the damage thw wiper blade will make on "Any" Brand of vinyl... I never had that much trouble with the perf stuff coming off, it's that it just fades very quickly, but most windows are on an angle also.

Hi Desire, I don't know how to do the "quote" thing. But you asked about the darkened solar filter. Sorry, don't have an anwswer for that. When I did it they added the window tint after I had installed the lettering on the inside.
