How about a "Barn", It is a measurement of area used in quantum physics. Those witty old scientists couldn't help themselves. They needed to come up with a name for this ultra tiny measurement, so they made a funny. It gives a whole new meaning to the phrase "Couldn't hit the broad side of a barn".
I've got more...

How bout the tag name ' Von ' Although some say it came from military, it actually was granted from a monarch in Germany. It indicates the lowest rank in nobility and though some persons would just adopt the name ' Von ' they often would get away with it.

Well, lets see.... how about the first use of an odometer in the U.S.
Answer is: Ben Franklin. As postmater he tried to find the best route around town so he set-up pegs on his carrage that turned a wheel mounted on the side that was marked off in 1/10ths. That way he could measure different routes.

That?s easy. The designers had no real artistic imagination. They just went along with all the auto manufactures with round logos Oh and they didn't want the covers to fall into the holes.

The US standard railroad gauge (width between the two rails) is 4 feet, 8.5 inches. That's an exceedingly odd number. Why was that gauge used? Because that's the way they built them in England, and the US railroads were built by English expatriates.
Why did the English build them like that? Because the first rail lines were built by the same people who built the
pre-railroad tramways, and that's the gauge they used.
Why did "they" use that gauge then? Because the people who built the tramways used the same jigs and tools that they used for building wagons which used that wheel spacing.
Okay! Why did the wagons have that particular odd wheel spacing? Well, if they tried to use any other spacing, the wagon wheels would break on some of the old, long distance roads in England, because that's
the spacing of the wheel ruts.
So who built those old rutted roads? The first long distance roads in Europe (and England) were built by Imperial Rome for their legions. The roads have been used ever since.
And the ruts in the roads? Roman war chariots first formed the initial ruts, which everyone else had to match for fear of destroying their wagon wheels. Since the chariots were made for (or by) Imperial Rome, they were all alike in the
matter of wheel spacing.
The United States standard railroad gauge of 4 feet, 8.5 inches derives from the original specification for an Imperial Roman war chariot. Specifications and bureaucracies live forever. So the next time you are handed a specification and wonder what horse's ass came up with it, you may be exactly right, because the Imperial Roman war chariots were made just wide enough to accommodate the back ends of two war horses. Thus, we have the answer to the original question.
Now the extra-terrestrial twist to the story...
When we see a Space Shuttle sitting on its launch pad, there are two big
booster rockets attached to the sides of the main fuel tank. These are solid rocket boosters, or SRBs. The SRBs are made by Thiokol at their factory in Utah. The engineers who designed the SRBs might have preferred to make them a bit fatter, but the SRBs had to be shipped by train from the factory to the launch site.
The railroad line from the factory had to run through a tunnel in the mountains. The SRBs had to fit through that tunnel. The tunnel is slightly wider than the railroad track, and the railroad track is about as wide as two horses' behinds.
So, the major design feature of what is arguably the world's most advanced transportation system was determined over two thousand years ago by the width of a horse's ass.
And you wonder why it's so hard to get ahead in this world...

Slang word used for Italian Americans 'WOP' actually came from early NY when the Italians would attempt to enter the country without proper documentation. The authorities identified them as 'With Out Papers' (WOP for short).

I like that joey, had not heard that before. The WOP thing I got from one the older Italians I worked with a few years ago. It was actuaaly applied to all illegal boat immigrants, but at the time they were mostly Italians and the label stuck.

What does the "D.C." in Washington,D.C. stand for?
Nope. Wrong again. C'mon, everyone knows it stands for "Da Capital".
Sorry, I just had to.
OK, here are a couple for you...
1. Did you know that in every Seinfeld episode there is a Superman somewhere? 2. Did you know Wilma Flintstone's maiden name was Wilma Slaghoopal, and Betty Rubble's maiden name was Betty Jean Mcbricker? 3. Humans, dolphins, and bonobonos (a subspecies of chimpanzee) are the only species that have sex for pleasure. 4. The only 15 letter word that can be spelled without repeating a letter is uncopyrightable. (that's the actual word, I wasn't trying to say I couldn't tell you that the word couldn't be copyrighted). OK, nevermind, that last comment made no sense so I'm outta here for now.

In the days of old, bells were considered to be as close to perfection as man could achieve. Because God is supposed to be the only being capable of perfection bell makers would put imperfections in the casting such as spelling errors on the makers mark.
The first pulsar discovered was designated the name LGM-1. Because pulsars emit radio emissions at a constant frequency it was postulated that they could be signals from extraterrestrial beings. LGM stands for Little Green Men.
While we're on the subject of the inane, I have a theory. If we were to stick a piece of buttered toast to the back of a cat (buttered side up because toast always falls on the floor buttered side down) and then drop the cat which everyone knows will land on it's feet. The conflicting forces should cause the cat to spin at an infinite rate before it hits the floor. This could then provide a cheap renewable non-poluting power source, as well as finally provide a use for cats. David

The expression "Barrel Ahead", as in to barrel ahead, originated during the building of the Erie Canal at the turn of the century. Dug by hand, and listed for deacdes as one of the "8 wonders of the world", the Canal Corporation had a "quota" each week for the crews...it didn't take into account the massive fieldstone beds right here in Western New York. So if on Friady morning, it appeared as though the weekly quota wouldn't be met...crew managers would place a barrel of whiskey at the point of qouta, as inspiration to the workers to dig harder and faster all day, for which they would be rewarded with the barrel of whiskey for weekend consumption. Managers would announce "barrel ahead" to entise the crews to make the quota.
I know..it's long winded, and useless, but I live on the canal and that stuff is cool. My wife calls me an "endless fountain of useless knowledge"
