We signed lots of papers in the last couple of days, taking us closer & closer to owning our little acreage. Two of the three assesments are in progress. The third and final one takes place later in the week.
And the plans for the new studio/shop are much better defined in the last while. Janis & I had the chance to spend a couple of hours on the property last Thursday and flipped the studio to take advantage of the great view to the southeast. It made redrawing the plans necessary, but the work will be worth it every time I look out the windows.
I'm starting to feel like Monte with all the red tape (but I don't think it's not nearly as onerous here.) I'm costing the materials and getting quotes for various things we can't handle ourselves.
The whole thing is starting to feel real instead of the long held dream that lived only in my head for so long. We even gave our landlord a head's up that we will be moving soon.
Our plan is to be in and settled enough for an informal letterhead shop warming on the Thursday before the Nanaimo meet in September. Although Giggle Ridge will already be closed for the season, we are thinking of leaving the flowers in so we can have a fun golf tournament for the folks who drop by. Contrary to what Donna believes, September is most often perfect weather... and we'll try and arrange that type of fall sunshine for the event.
And I offer a challenge to all the folks out there... I can't be beat at Giggle Ridge!
24 more sleeps until we move!

Sounds good, Dan. As an artist, would you be benefitted by lots of windows/skylights for natural light? I myself am a "light freak" as my wife puts it. Just LOVE those H.O. fixtures. White walls, white ceilings, and white floors, if I could maintain it. I'll save descriptions of my dream shop for later, it's late. Jim D.

I'm not much of a white walls kinda guy... The walls won't hardly be visible once I get all my book shelves up along with all the collection of pictures and memorabilia.
There's gonna be a huge 25' curved wall of windows that go up about 12 feet or so on the east side to give me a spectacular view of the mountains... so there should be lots of light. I want to carve some massive beams... and the desk will be held up by a tree trunk & branches. Over the desk some of the branches will house lighting for my desk area. All of it will be carved concrete of course (our specialty)
The ceiling will be antiqued plaster with lots of directed lighting. Our big purple dragon mascot will hang from the 18 foot peaked ceiling. (Skylights would make him fade) And an earth color tile floor with lots of inlaid detail I'm thinking at this point... All kind of muted earth colors to show off my gathered treasures.(Janis calls it dust collecting junk) And with all my collections it will be kind of busy but organized clutter.
I like lots of light... but much of my design work is done at a computer these days and glare from the screen is a big concern.
In the workshop... that will be a different matter. The walls & ceiling will be light colored there for sure. The floor will be painted a light color as well. Light is a major concern there. On the south side (back wall) there is a second 12 foot door that opens into a 40' greenhouse. My thought is that it will be a great source of light and fresh air and act as a buffer to shield me from the cold in winter. In the summer I will open both large doors to let the air blow through the shop and let in lots of light too.
I have a few original ideas to make both spaces very personal to me, and comforable too.

You must be on cloud nine, it's not often that dreams become a reality. Sounds like your 'office' could be right at home in a theme park, halfway up a very large tree. As for the challenge, I'll talk to my wife and the boys, as we are avid 'mini' folfers. Werever we travel we are sure to tackle a course or two. Heck, we drive to Parksville just to play for the afternoon, swing by coombs on the way back. What's par on your course?
Live the dream, we're all envious, in a good sort of way.

Glad to hear you are hooked on mini golf... one of the courses of the Parksville adventure golf was done by my brother... the course in Coombs was the first one I did as a complete project.
You'll be glad to hear I have a brand new project on the drawing board for Parksville. The theme is still under wraps but the customer wants to outdo the other ones there. It will be built in two phases with 36 holes completed after thwo years. We are to start in September and it will be a cool one.
Giggle Ridge has a par of 44 stokes.

Yes, recognized your style. Look forward to the next project, especially when you have to out-do the others. I'm sure with the vantage point from the new 'office' you'll be inspired to rise above and beyond on this project. Keep us in the loop.
