I'm getting ready to do a direct marketing mailing. I am trying to figure out if I should include a letter stating a little about our company and a request to be added to bidding lists or just send the flyer and be done with it.

Anyone have any tips or letters they would like to share?

All of us, at one time or another, receive this type of marketing......... to me, a personal letter telling about the company and their accomplishments gets my attention more so than just a zeroxed non-descript letter. Even a couple of actual photos of your work with your business sticker on the back is an added plus. Also, you could do a collage of photos and have them run off. Those are only 50 bucks a hundred.
Take your vacation BEFORE you do all this advertisement.......... because, later..... you will be far too busy to even think about a vacation!! [Wink]

Amy,

I created a postcard with about 6 pictures of my work on it (kinda what John mentioned) that is really bright (yellow/orange gradient for the background). I did the bright background to catch folks attention so they would at least look at it. I also put my phone number and website address on both sides. On the back I did a little copy with what we offer and that I was a member of the Chamber, blah, blah, blah and then a short list of some clients.

Since I've been busy I haven't sent them out (I know I should still be doing it) but when I do send them out I keep track (in an excel spreadsheet) of who I sent to and the date. I can later go back and see what type of response rate and if I've sent them to the same company, etc. Since my postcards are the same cost to mail as a letter I send out about 30 a week.

Direct marketing is a great idea. But, your name in the Headline is a DEAD line. You can include anything you wish. However, any thing you do include should cover this main point.

And, a shotgun (anybody) list will not produce as well as a specific target list.

You absolutely must talk about their pain. What bothers them in their business and how you canaddress it. You cannot talk about yourself and how good you are. They dont care.

For example. Which interestes you more.
We make you feel good because we are well trained.. call us
V/S
We will stop that disrupting pain today..

or
a:Bills repair shop
V/S

The letter can be as long as you wish. Studies prove that a long letter will be read if you talk about what you can do to scratch their itch.

Remember the Danmark letters written by Drew selling you electrical products? It was a 3 page letter selling a stereo, or tape player. It set records. This format is continuing to set records.
