Happy Cinco de Mayo Day to all and especially our Espan~ola friends!
What are you doing? anything special? My son and I took a trip downtown to one of the many Spanish bakeries and picked up "authentic" cookies for his Spanish class, says his grade will be better! I liked that project for sure! All the breads just stacked up all around in the open like folded laundry, there for the taking,,, the croissants, turnovers, cakes, what a blast!
We used to visit the Santa Maria boat docked in Columbus, and that was fun, but now it's more like planning a trip to Spain in two years!

I don't know much about the Cinco de Mayo facts. It seems to be something commercialized to sell Corona beer and Sauza Tequila. Good marketing has placed it on par with St. Patrick's day locally. When I was living in Mexico in 1983, the celebrations were over several days starting from the 28 of April to the 3rd of May. The 28 is Children's day and all children should receive candy. May 1 is May Day. And May 3 is the Fiesta of De la Cruz, when babies are baptized and building under construction are christened. When the days run togegther over a weekend the party really heats up. It is called a puente(bridge) Ater the third most of the revelers are no longer standing.

Around our house, it's Cinco de Sammie. My daughter's birthday is May 3rd so we always have a big party that weekend - fajitas, margaritas, etc, etc. We had a blast this year - lots of people, lots of fun.

You would THINK the Diazes would celebrate, wouldn't you? But Bill is only 1/4 Spanish (his grandfather was a Spainard who moved to Puerto Rico) and I am 100% German. What should we serve.....Sauerbraten on a tortilla? Auslese Sangria? I don't think so.....maybe I will just do spaghetti.....

It’s a big day for me today I gave up smoking 5 years ago on Cinco de Mayo.
Someone had told me, and I clung to it, that one day, if I persevered in attempting to stop, I would actually make it. I had smoked 2 packs on a good day for over thirty years . I was a truly dedicated smoker, and did not really believe it was going to be in my future to ever stop for good, or that there was life worth living after tobacco.
So – for me Cinco de Mayo 1998 is the happy day I started getting my health back, as well as a good chunk of self- esteem. Glad Deb brought up the topic, so I could tell about it.

Myra, Your reason to celebrate is as awesome as Mike's. Congrats on the anniversary. I hope both of you feel much healthier because of it. Now I need to cut back on eating too much and at such odd hours.

You wonder why I hang out here, gee, what a great surprise to hear about these things! Sammy, a big Happy Bday to you, young lady! Mike, a big congrats to you on your success, and Myra too! Cinco de Mayo day now means a lot more now, and what strength you guys have to give up these things. I've toned down my life too for optimum health so I can celebrate life a little better too. (I don't have to cook much supper either since my son's Spanish class brought tons of food in at 10 am, and he is still stuffed at 7pm!

Great post Deb, glad to hear you enjoyed all the "Pan Dolce" (sweet bread) and thanks for thinking of us latinos, chicanos, hispanicos, mexicanos, brown brothers, border brothers, we have all kinds of names, call us what you want but just don't call us late for the Enchiladas, especially on a day like this! Like Si said it had to do with the Mexicans fighting the French back in 1862, way out numbered! But to let you in on a little secret, I heard an old priest gave lot of the brothers to drink some "magic potion" so that they would be fearless, and fight to the last bullet! What's a trip is last Saturday with the Oscar De La Hoya and Campas who drank some of that potion, Oscar could not bring him down even with all the combinations he gave, anyway... And for all those who quit what ever it was you felt you needed to quit, I tip my hat to you. I had to quit drinking them damn Tequilas myself, blows me away to wake up, open your eyes look at the ceiling and wonder who's house is this? Just kidding... Hey Cheryl, yeah next time it'll be Crab Enchiladas, if you don't like sea food then we'll make it chicken, did you notice I said "we" like you know...you are going to learn how to cook this kind of food Don't worry I won't make you get up at 4am to make home made tortillas.
And a Happy Birthday to Sammie!
