We repainted our building "sign" which is essentially a frame with awning material stretched over it.
We used NazDar's Gloss vinyl ink, thinned a bit with the appropriate thinner. We went from dark green to dark blue. You you probably have to use two coats to go from black to red and you can expect some fading after a few years I'd expect.
Once it was dry a few days we applied our new logo design in vinyl which is holding up well. It's been about 5 or 6 years now.

Is it a vinyl awning or acryllic? I just finished painting an awning two days ago - it was made with Sunbrella, which is an acryllic canvas material.
I washed it and painted it with exterior latex paint ("house" paint). Went from dark green to pastel blue in two coats. Latex paints are pretty "springy". I'll let you know in five years how its holding up.
