Shep

I first want to apologize for the delay and I hope that you don't mind me not putting anything on the surface!...I would have just flubbed it up and the pallet is yours to enjoy as you wish!

For those who might appreciate seeing this process, I post the progress below in steps.

The original design is shown below and copied from Atkinson's book of design. I had wanted to create this piece for some time and here was my excuse!

 -

The finished carving was in Basswood. The reason I chose this specie was for it ease of grain and I chose to sculpt it in wood because of the 3-d aspect of the design. It would hold up much better than doing it in clay.

Here are a couple of photos of it in the process of being carved. -

 -

After the sculpting was complete, I had broken it at least 5 times but it was worth it to acheive the delicate fleur-de-lis in the design.

Once completed, I put several layers of pelucid on to protect and harden it a little as well as create a super smooth finish for the molding process.

Once completed, I began to "clay up" the piece for molding. This particular mold was a bugger. There was so much going on in the front as well as the back that a very precise following of the "seams" would need to be followed to asure little cleanup in the final piece. The photo below shows the clay up on the front.

 -

After the completion of the clay up, the rubber was poured. I used a silicon rubber on this work because I had planned to replicate the piece in urethane and polystyrene resin. The photo below shows complete 2 part rubber mold after proper sealing of the box and release applied to the surface.

 -

Once the mold was completed, the part shown below is a 2 part urethane resin part from the mold.

 -

Taking the part, it was wiped down, trimmed and prepared for gilding. I surface gilded with 23kt gold and the process shown below is the piece in progress.

 -

Once completed, the piece was antiqued with special varnishes from Esoteric supply and this is where I had to stop!

 -

Many felt I should paint something on it but I just could not bring myself to do it...not only did I fear messing it up, but I could never have matched the talents that Shep's paint brush could give it if he so desired.

Moldmaking will be part of our projects planned for our meet here in June. My rubber supplier has graciously agreed to donate 1k worth of rubber for folks who would like to cast objects during our meet!

Shep was the perfect recipient of this project and although late in it's arrival, it was definately made for the right person!

Now the "Ball is in my court" so to speak.....I really wasn't expecting a "Panel" that I would have to "Finish"...he hehe he.
Now I am open to suggestions as to what that I can add to this ..or should I leave as is.....
My first thoughts was to hang it on the wall and enjoy.....however the oval area begs to have something added........ But what do I paint ???????? Anyone have ideas ?????????
Post them here...Please.

Beautiful!

I'm thinking an oval mirror with beveled edges, and some schmancy glue-chiped and ornately painted letter "L", ... for Letterheads.

Very nice work Robert, I love the carving, and then all the discussion about molds and urethane.

Would love to learn more about molds and the urethane process, as we use just urethane in our dimensional work.

Thanks for sharing...lucky Shep!

Thanks for all the kind words

It was a labor of love!...and I knew Shep would or could do it justice. Maybe one day, I will not be intinidated to try my hand at the painting!

And for those attending our meet in JUne, we just ask that you keep the item you bring to be molded to a 6" area.

The mold for Shep cost $250.00 worth of rubber!

of course it was a dump mold and that is the easiest to do but not the most cost saving method!

What a beautiful complement to a magnificent piece of art. Absolutely beautiful work on the part of both true artists.

I got to feel that piece at Fred's Meet in OKC, in progress. Very nice indeed. Shep, you must have read my mind on what to do with the oval, although I really didn't think of the obvious yellow. Great job by all. Jack
