I recieved this Panel Friday Afternoon, What a SURPRISE! And what a way to end off the week. Thanks so much Doug Allan from Island Signs in Maui Hawaii. Imagine getting a Panel from so far away, with so much in contrast, but also so much in common. We are both Islands out in the ocean about 8000 miles from each other, but unfortunately we don't have Palm trees and warm sandy beaches, but we do have sandy beaches with the freezing Atlantic ocean. If you notice he has The map of Newfoundland to the left with Fir trees and Water, and to the right the Islands of Hawaii with Palm trees and Water.

And the Island Letterheads Name says it all.

Doug I love it and it will be Proudly Displayed in my showroom, What a conversation Piece to talk about with customers.

Thanks so much!

Alright... the post I've been watching for.

I took a quick look at what topics may be of interest this morning, read a few replies to one I had been following & had just clicked on a link in my favorites to check another board when the corner of my eye saw Neil's name in the "posted by" column. Clicked back & sure enough after over 3 weeks in transit based on my insured delivery receipt, it made it safe & sound. woohoo!!! Thanks in part I'm sure to the sturdy crate that Monte built to ship my panel to me.

I was not allowing myself to be impatient with the postman since I made Neil wait so long for me to finish the panel anyway, but I am very glad that it arrived finally. I took a lot of pics for a step-by step, so I will work on some descriptions to go along with the pics & then post it somewhere.

The first gold leaf I ever did was on a smaller version of this panel that I printed on my edge as a testing piece for this project. Then I made two 18 x 24 panels at once using the final methods I had decided upon. Both panels came through to the final step without much difference except a small smudge in the wet salmon paint on one of them when I was removing the vinyl mask. The other one was gilded & shipped even though my inexperience caused some damage to a letter.

Here's a closeup of the lettering. I kind of messed up the gold on the worst letter to mess up on, the capital "L". The black filigree schtuff was just vinyl applied on top of the finished gold leaf. I guess I should have cleared it because the transfer tape pulled up a lot of gold. I went around with some tape on my finger & lifted up more gold all around the letter L to spread the problem around to make it look sort of antique. I was too unsure of my abilities to risk re-doing it. When I finally gild the extra panel I made for myself, I will make a new gilded "L" to send to you Neil.

"Island Letterheads"

That's perfect Doug!

When I started this whole thing, it was my hope that people would try some new techniques and hopefully learn something from the experience.

I've watched you dig in and learn gold leaf and that makes me happy! It's not so hard, eh?

I hope your next attempt is a paying job. [Big Grin]

Thanks Terry, I think I'd like to do a few more gilds before taking on the pressure of a paying customer, but the dates on that carved panel for French Kiss a Brush will teach me some more.

I guess I'll post mystep-by-stephere as well to keep things together.
