Can a galvanized square street pole be successfully painted?
Aluminum poles are so expensive and the paint is blasted right off anyway. jsullivan@thesignco.com

Yes, but you need to passivate the galvanized before priming. Use a solution of vinegar and hot water, and then rinse with clean water afterwards. Once completely dry apply a coat of metal etch primer (aka vinyl wash primer). Overtop I've succesfully used automotive primers, followed by enamels ( marine, automotive). This will last a long time, and look great.

Jim Sullivan! Hi neighbor.
I see you survived the never ending winter.
-------------------------------
Peter's answer is probably best, seeing where's he's from - if it survives in that climate, it should be good enough for New England.

But here's what I was taught a long time ago, by an ornamental iron guy; He swore by using latex paint on galvanized iron. No primer, no nuttin, just acrylic latex out of the can. He pointed to a large black ornamental galvanized fence that surrounded his property, saying "That's been on there 15 years". (flat black)

I've always painted galvanized stuff with latex since then, if it was feasible. But I'm going to disclaim myself on two points - First, I don't paint enough galvanized to know whether this really holds up any better than other methods. Second, that guy was in St. Petersburg Florida, a fair distance from you, still a harsh climate, but in a whole different way. So that's everything I know on the subject. Good luck.

Galvanized metal can be painted by priming the metal with XIM primer. Then prime and paint with your usual process.

I have done this with good results. No matter what, dealing with galvanized is not fun. Make sure you add extra to the quote for this extra work.

Have a great one!
