The 42e is a pretty good printer (300 dpi).......but outdoor stuff? If you're serious you may need to change it over to pigmented inks like the Encad GO or Dico-Jet, and get the correct water resistant materials to print on. Even then you may want to laminate for scratch resistance. The regular dye based inks won't last any length of time (maybe a month) outside no matter what you coat it with. Fade is the problem.

I don't know anything about the rip you have but I'm pretty sure it will need one for processing and speed. The one I had was "photo print" made by Amiable Technologies and it worked pretty well.

You can dowload a copy of the manuals, ICC profiles, etc... here > http://encad.com/Support/index.asp

You will want to have several extra cartridges on hand (check e-bay for these and maybe even inks) and it's kind of messy when changing them so you may want to wear rubber gloves.

Did you get all the stuff with it? It originally came with the priming gun for pulling ink through the system and priming the cartridges, an extra set of ink tanks and hoses and some large surrenges for filling the cartridges.

Hope this helps.....Tony

Contact Kent DeSautel. He knows these machines inside and out and is really great at helping out. I bought a NJ Pro 36 and he walked me through things that needed repair. He sells inks and cartridges on Ebay big time buthe can also be contacted at kent@wallyssupermakets.com. I got to know this machine so well tha tI bought a 2nd so that I can fix it up and sell it. Encad's are REALLY easy to work on.

<p>One of the first things tha tyou are going to want to do, is check and see what firmware is loaded on your machine. Power it up see what it says. I don't remember what the current firmware is, but you can find out on the encad website. If you don't have the latest, you can download it off the website and install it on the printer. The books says that you need a certain Encad cable to do it but I didn't have it. Kent walked me through loading it through dos with out this cable.

I started out using the Signlab RIP and it worked just fine. When I did upgrade to poster shop, I did notice a big difference in the output. Better colours, and no limitation on size. My Signlab limits the print to 100" which can be a pain in the butt.
I run the DicoJet inks (reseller) and run my 600e and 42e with Kents cartridges. The cartridges from Kent or Dan are 1/2 the cost of Encads and can be used for any colour. The DicoJet inks will give you your outdoor durability as far as UV fade, but depending on the application, needs to be laminated for protection.
Keep your old cartridges, because you will need the chip off of the back to run the after market cartridges. If you need a hand, just give me a buzz
