Today started out as a great day.....beautiful sunshiny 75 degrees....
My Sign supplier was on time with the delivery...
this is one of the jobs that was slipped in .when my customers found out that I was going to be out of town .in Fla.......for a few days....naturally they had to have this installed before I left town.!!!!!!!!!
This is a double face 4x8 Nudo board ( The one with aluminum faces and a plastic core) THe kind that has a protective sheet of CLEAR plastic.....No problem...I removed the Plastic and proceeded to apply the Vinyl......(Great results) every thing was smooth .no wrinkles .no bubbles...no mispellings....
I turned the board over and did the same thing to the other side..I first applied a 18" by 96" reverse cut panel all the way across...no problem...no wrinkles..no bubbles........
By this time I am way ahead of schedule..and I am thinking an extra $850. will go a long way on my trip to Fla.......might just be able to buy a few things..........
Something is not right..!!!!!!!!! OH NOOOOOOOOOOOO !!!!!!!!!!!! I didn't remove the Damn Clear cover from this side.........
Come on now......fess up has any one ever did this ???

only once. that was all it took. The one I hate is when you do a two sided directional sign and forget to reverse one of the arrows. when installed they point different directions. ooops.

One of the guys who worked at Lenny's used Franklin Gothic as his one-stroker. It took him forever to paint a sign but he made them look good! He lettered 8 metal signs one week, which took most of the week to get them done and only as I was handing them over to the customer did I notice a strange wrinkle on one corner of one sign. We'd had blanks with a protective cover, but they were really cheap plastic and easy to detect. These were covered so perfectly nobody noticed, even through wiping them down, taping and removing the tape. Unfortunately, once pulled on slightly the cover fell away easily. Lenny, of course, wanted to let them go out as is, but the customer had seen the problem and they all had to be redone.
Not long after that I had a sign laid out, ready to letter, when this same guy came over and started picking at the edge. Darned if he didn't pull off another plastic sheet!

"I" have not yet (came close)BUT... I had a bunch of 18 X 24 aluminum panels to do... explained to a helper how to apply the vinyl. This was when the 18 x 24's were masked on one side in CLEAR, now they have some kind of marking for you to see. Anyway, the signs were all done, the helper went home, I checked the signs and at first wondered why the one side was a little shinier than the other. WHOOPS!

Nope... never done that. I use Alumalite... it has writing on the plastic along with rows of arrows which is there to supposedly make it easier to pull it off. Its suppose to come off easier in a certain direction. I haven't noticed a difference.
Now, not reversing the arrows? Or upside down on the other side? Guilty on both counts.

Yup! guilty here too. did the upside down second side ONCE! did the opposing arrow second side ONCE! & I did the graphics applied to clear protective sheeting ONCE! BUT... I also am guilty of letting the sign with the graphics on the clear overlay go out the door... on purpose. It was a $30 aluminum "NO CREDIT" sign for the local junkyard, & it is still looking fine!
I did a sign with the proper 2-sided arrows once, but the client called me from the job site on his cell. He says "the arrow is pointing the wrong way".
I said "turn it around",
but he said "NO, I checked that already, that one is wrong too!"
I said "No, pick up the whole sign & turn it around!"

Last summer I assembled a 4x8 with stringers and posts, on the ground,in front of the customer, and when we stood it up I had the board upside down. Yipes....! I blamed him for lettin' me do it.... I think I had too much sun that day !

never done that before shep, but i did layout a 4'x8' plywood sign, cut the copy, weeded it, put the application tape on, then looked at the work order again and it said in big bold letters 4'x6' signface to fit in existing frame!!!!

I did two of these on one sign. This one was all paint. I finished the second side and pulled it off the easel. At this point I realized the second side was upside down. Then I realized the first side would be easy to remove, so I peeled it off, flipped it upside down, and relettered it. Installed the sign upside down, and it looked great.
Haven't done either of them since.

Guilty of the arrow deal...more than once! But have to say that the most interesting is explaining to real estate agents that they don't need "right" a-boards and "left" a-boards. Fun hearing when the light goes on in their head!

aww Shep, you know I'd never make that kinda dumb move myself!!! wellll OK, I relaize that it might look like I'm guilty but...well, yeah...if I WAS guilty I'd have to agree that I'm a repeat offender, OK?
At the end of an all-nighter to try to get caught-up at the shop, I finished painting a little 2-sided aluminum sign for a nail salon (a job I'd postponed way too long & had to install first thing in the morning). Finished the damn thing just in the nick of time & was gathering stuff for the install (patting myself on the back cuz it looked pretty good & I'd finally figured out a trick way to hang it that, if it worked, would look pretty good) when I realized that like you, I'd left the film on the 2nd side! No time for a redo so I ran over to hang it & she loved it!! She was telling me all about how much she liked it (including the bracket work) so at that point, I pointed out my mistake, explained what happened & told her I'd do another one but would leave the first one so she'd at least have a sign. She didn't have her checkbook with her (yeah, I know... always get a deposit BUT she HAD waited patiently for quite a while before I delivered) so I told her to just pay me when I brought the replacement out. She thought that was great (she'd hit a dry spell while she was waiting on me) and threw in some free nail work as a bonus & said take my time!
So.....while I've had manicures before, I've never had a professional pedicure. Should be interesting......
See ya at Nettie's for the woodgrain class (which reminds me, ...better let her know I'm gonna be there ) If she's out of room I'll wait outside & catch you after the class.

Guilty too! I should have kept the liner and framed it as one of those famous moments, like getting a splotch in the only part of a screen printed shirt that wasn't covered, and somehow passed inspection till the customer got home... That one still hurt because the customer didn't pay for it- it was part of a charitable job for a local school- and the shirt owner's mother was a nutcase (to put it nicely) with a name for complaining about everything. (poor girl) We replaced the shirt but not before she'd complained to the whole shire, more or less, how bad we are, were, and always will be..... The only good thing about lettering on the clear protective coating when I did that about 18 years ago, was that it made a faint ghostly image onto the colorbond, and I didn't have to lay it out all over again. It was a pictorial with blended shaded letters. One lesson like that is enough forever, especially when it's in front of the owner that one of you discovers it... Something about Pride coming before fall springs to mind.... but then the person who has never made any mistakes, never did anything at all

An ex-boss of mine silk screened 3oo or so 18 x 24" White aluminum blanks and kept commenting on the terrible finish the nazdar was producing. Scratched his head for a bit and when I got a chance to go in the back room, immediately pointed out the very same problem. Boy did he feel foolish. I think he feels this way alot.

Back in my first year in the sign biz (fresh out of college) I toasted a couple and started lettering, in big block letters, the word LIQUOR on two 4'x8' sheets of aluminum (three letters on each panel). When I put them together, I noticed that it read "LIQUUR." After wiping the big black letter off the yellow panel, I relettered the same letter again. Fortunately, Dewar's doesn't have the same effect.

WARNING...that plastic wrap is everywhere. Since this post I was looking around in the shop, and the shop radio had got where you could hardly read the dial, so when I went to clean it guess what!...yep. it had plastic wrap on it. Peeled iot off and now is good as new. Also when cleaning the microwave I wondered, could it be? Yep, the whole thing was wrapped in plastic! Im here to tell you, that stuff is everywhere!
