Greetings from Sunny Michigan, (I love saying that)

As the work week starts for my fellow Letterheads, I am compelled to share with you:

What I Have Learned in the Sign Business,
(Part II, Employee Edition)

1) Artists are born, not made. You cannot expect to pay for a cashier and get an artist.
2) A little freedom goes a long way with the right person
3) Failure usually comes from the top, and flows down, (old plumbers rule)
4) Communication makes work life easier
5) If you make all the decisions, you might as well send everybody home. Deligate and trust, (big lesson for me)
6) Hire attitude, everything else can be taught
7) Hiring with the idea of changing them into what you want is like marrying someone with the idea of molding them. You have to see the potential BEFORE you hire. People change only if they want.
8) Everybody's happy when the boss buys latte' on occasion.

Rick

More employers could do well to read and heed the good advice you have written here.

As an employer of up to 20 people at times I know how important these items are.

points 4 and 6 were especially pertinent.

Thanks for the reminder.

Hey Rick, do you know of any emloyees who'd let me be a boss like that?! LOL. Most of the people around here who have good attitudes an' potential are makin' a more money than even me. If I went by potential, I'd've gotten married at least 3 more times! .....All kidding aside, Your [Wink] list is right on!!

You speak the truth.

I know several sign company owners in the Nashville area that could really use a copy of your list.

They tolerate drunks and drug heads as employees but give the hard working "family man type" the hard road.

Go figure.
