I just attemped and completed my first routed brass job.
The smallest letters were 1" lower case and I had some problems with them.
I did not purchase the brass, so I don't know
how hard the material is. The brass is 3/16" thick
and I used 3/16" dia. alum, cutting bits.
I made four passes at feed rate of 40, spindle rate of 15k. I finshed the job at these rates
but broke two bits at higher feed rates.

Please advise on how you might tackle this one...

brass is much harder than aluminum. and thus needs a slower speed.. also it clogs the cutter more. use some cuttin fluid...

I cut brass at 30 inches per minute and 18K RPM. For bits I use a 1/4" bit made by Onsrud. www.onsrud.com
part # 63-620. It is a single edge upcut carbide bit that has a short length of cut so it is a good strong bit. Haven't broken one yet.

If it were me, I'd pull my Gemini catalog off the shelf and order water cut brass letters from them. The price is right and it saves me time and headaches. We use to use our cnc to cut metal and had good success. However the clean up was a pain in the butt and there are always frustrations like broken bits, flying spray (cutting oil) and such. I agree that if you are cutting your own brass you will need to slow the feed down quite a bit and make sure that you have a liberal spray of cutting fluid to keep the bit cool and the cut clean.

I still think Gemini is the way to go!! Good luck!
